Jamake Highwater manages to touch on the arts of almost every American Indian nation in one reasonably sized book that makes up for its occasional lack of ------- with its remarkable -------.

(A) specificity . . detail
(B) discontinuity . . concreteness
(C) loftiness . . inaccessibility
(D) profundity . . inclusiveness
(E) uniqueness . . comparability

How are you supposed to do this if they give such little information?

Ok, here we go:

A) It can’t be A because they both mean the same thing.

B) Lack of discontinuity is a good thing, so that’s wrong.

C) Inaccessibility has a negative connotation, so it’s wrong because it should have a positive one.

D) Profundity refers to the quality of being profound, so I don’t think that works either.

E) I don’t see anything wrong with this answer.

Is the answer E?

im pretty sure the answer is actually D, because profundity means depth, which cannot be achieved if the book “touches on the arts of almost every American Indian nation.” The reason E is wrong is because the sentence doesn’t explicitly mention anythin about “uniqueness” therefore it cannot be right.

the answer is D.

From what I’ve concluded while trying to answer this question, there were two possible answers. A or D.

For choice A, it would make sense because it’s the same. It says LACK of “blank”, so you have to make up for what it’s lacking. If you lack specificity, then it would make sense that Jamake Highwater makes up for its lack of specificity with detail.

It could be D because profundity is a positive word, so it makes sense to say the nation lacked it, which caused the Jamake Highwater to make up for it by including(inclusiveness) the profundity.

I don’t see why D would be a better answer though. :/

Ouch.

Ok, the answer is D then.

I can tell that it is definitely not A; you don’t make up for something with the same thing.

An example of this would be how a basketball player makes up for his lack defense with his/her stellar offense.

You make up a weakness with a strength, and if they’re the same thing, then you aren’t really making up anything.

^ sorry… I didn’t mean to offend you. Didn’t realize my response was rude…

I see now why it can’t be A. I was confused by the sentence by thinking it had two different subjects, when all along it was just talking about the same book.

Thanks for help me guys! ^^

both words have to be positive, so just eliminate choices with any words that sound negative…
A) specificity . . detail
(D) profundity . . inclusiveness
(E) uniqueness . . comparability

now read the sentence, you know what the two words in “A” means and it just doesn’t make sense, ao now you have

(D) profundity . . inclusiveness
(E) uniqueness . . comparability

hmm now you have two choices, pretty good, I for one picked D because i thought comparability didn’t make much sense.
