September 2010 ACT Science Discussion

^I’m almost 100% positive that it’s so the mass can be let in and out of the bag.

Since the experiments were measuring decomposition and degradation, there’s no reason to need water and air inside the bags.

skiiz21, i WISH, but there’s def no consensus on that one yet…that question is driving me crazy!

^^ Yeah, but like I said before, I’m almost positive the choice was: “so the mass can**'t** be let in and out of the bag”, which makes it wrong.

^Yeah if that’s the case then I’m just as lost as everyone else.

@billabong i believe acttester is right about the what the choice said

Ugh…reading this thread makes me depressed at seeing how many problems I have the potential to get wrong. I think Imma stop reading and just get depressed later when I see my score rather than now and later D:

It was hell. Gene part was hella confusing too

I’m 100% sure that there was no “n’t” after can. You’re confusing the negative in that word with another choice, which said that the bags are used to “preveNT decomposition”, which is, stupidly, what i put.

Read this all you 75%'ers! :D

For some reason, I usually suck at Science (like in the 30-32 range) and I destroyed this section (apart from one question) and thought it was easy. Guess I got lucky? o_o

^or maybe you got other questions wrong but you don’t know of them because they weren’t discussed yet.

Ok, let’s make a list of all the choices for that question. There was “water and air”, “mass”, “decomposition?”; what else?

The carbon one as well

Possibly, but I believe most of the ambiguous ones have already been discussed. All that’s left are the easy read the graph/chart/diagram/table ones.

^If mass was an option and it wasn’t “can’t” then I see no reason why it isn’t the correct answer.

Ok so: 1. Mass
2. Water and Air
3. Carbon
4. Decomposition? (I don’t remember this one)

Can anyone verify these choices?

billabong: But air and water would be needed to simulate a real-life situation where plants would be in the open and subject to the increased soil temperature.

acttester: Yes I am pretty sure those were the choices

^They used the heating lamps to simulate global warming. The fact that material could fall out of the bags was how they could have 3 graphs.

Yes, but if they were in bags that were totally sealed, they wouldn’t be able to get any air or water from outside. They would wither away a lot quicker than they really would.

Then again, the mass too would not be able to escape. So both answers would be viable…?

I am almost a 100% sure there was not a 'nt after the answer choice. I was not sure about this answer and after rereading the passage when I returned to the question, I chose the mass change one because that is what the passage stated.

ALSO: New question- what was the timing one, for the sound of the detector and the other thing. it gave you 2 times and asked which one was correct.
