Going to the museum in Rockland after a hiking trip in Bretton wood. I will probably leave Brettonwood in the afternoon.
It’s Bretton Woods…isn’t it?
How do you plan to drive? There aren’t a lot of east west roads in those parts.
I think it is. After I wrote it, I did think it didn’t look right. I plan to take 302. Would you recommend that?
If you take the 302 route through Conway…you can actually end up in Portland ME…and it’s not too much longer than going any other way. Stop for a nice dinner in Portland, and then proceed to Rockland…about an hour or so.
Too bad you are north of the Kancamagus Highway (Rte 112). It’s a lovely drive.
I don’t have any advice about what to see that would not take you out of your way, such as Height of Land near Mooselookmeguntic, but I would advise you to stay north when crossing into Maine and avoid Conway like the plague. Especially on a holiday weekend. The traffic will be awful.
If you take the northern route as suggested by @consolation, it takes you through the greater Augusta area.
What exactly are you looking for? If you leave Bretton Woods at 1…it is almost a four hour drive to Rockland.
What time does that museum close? Are you planning to go there the same day as your drive? Or will you be spending the night someplace…and then going the next day?
Are you looking to sightsee along the way? Or are you looking for a dinner stop? Or what? @Iglooo
You’ll go by Lewiston so you could pop over to visit Bates. They have a small museum, too. Check the hours.
@thumper1 A leisurely dinner and an overnight stop on the way.
I personally would head towards Portland…have a nice dinner…spend the night, and drive up to Rockland.
Or just go straight to Rockland…and have a nice dinner there.
Or drive to Rockport or Camden for dinner. Both also nice lodging some of it overlooking the bay.
When are you doing this?
We were just in Portland for a couple of days, and had some really good food.
Portland was just voted Bon Appetite’s “ food city of 2018” or something like that.
There are tons of restaurants right in the downtown area.
It will be at the end of September. Portland looks to be a bit of a detour.
Are you going to the Farnsworth? DH provided engineering details for the repair of an exhibit hall roof after it collapsed catastrophically in the late '90s. It should be safe now, ha.
Yes. I wasn’t worried about roof collapsing but still good to know!
If it was me, given it’s only a drive of a little more than three hours, I just spend that night in the Rockland area as well. There’s plenty to explore in the Mid-coast Maine area using the Rockland/Camden area as a base.
I may be held back and not leave Bretton Woods until later in the afternoon, 4ish.
Augusta is a blip on the map in terms of traffic, unlike tourist-packed Conway.
End of September will probably be leaf-peeping season in the Rangely area.
