Serious Injury = No job or volunteering

Without going into too much detail, how would you acknowledge a serious accident (that occurred WHILE volunteering) that caused a kid to literally be laid up all summer? My DS is going to be a senior and this accident makes him unable to work or volunteer since he is basically on bed rest for the next 6 weeks and it will affect his college apps. He was on track to letter in Volunteering but now we’re not sure. He had started a summer job but now that’s not possible either. We discussed writing his essay about his near death experience but I don’ think he’s had enough time to process the meaning of it yet.

Sorry this happened. He can always put a quick (one or two line) explaination in the additional comment section. (Ex. I spent the summer of 2024 recovering from an accident.)

That’s what my kid did to explain a summer recovering from major surgery and hospitalization during the school year. The statement was brief and to the point – didn’t even disclose the medical causes. He had no trouble with admissions.

He could say something like: “I spent summer of 2024 recovering from a serious accident and was unable to participate in any other activities.”

My kid considered but decided against mentioning it anywhere else in his app. So sorry this happened to your son, and glad he is safe. He will do great with his apps and admissions – don’t worry. I wish him the best in his recovery.

I’d be straight up - suffered an injury that did not allow him to participate.

For many colleges, ECs are of low or no importance.

Thanks, everyone. Great advice. He’s lucky to be alive but its such a bummer for him both physically and mentally.
