Serious Opinion about Harvard and other schools and my chances.

Hello to all, I know this is not an accurate representation of my actual chances, but I would like somebody else’s perspective on my credentials. If you could chance me for the following schools that would be greatly appreciated.

Football- Freshman and Varsity Team- I played defensive line for the freshman team, and then my sophomore year, I received a varsity letter for playing in a few varsity games. I plan to do the same the next two years, and, possibly become a captain.

Track- Varsity- I throw shot put and discus for my track team. I was mainly JV, but I threw some on varsity as well. I plan to improve enough, as this was my first year, so that I can go to state in discus.

I will maintain my 4.0 GPA, and I hope to get my ACT score up to at least a 31 or 32. So, if you could please tell me how you think I would chance applying to the schools above that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. I am an african- american under-represented minority sophomore student in Ohio

HYPSM, and the like, admit students based upon “character”. That’s an old fashioned word that means what you believe in and how you think – all qualities that cannot be discerned from the items in your post.

Not trying to be mean but you honestly don’t have a chance for any of those schools except BC with a 28 on your ACT. Do some research

You may have a shot a BU or Tufts if you manage to get a higher ACT or SAT. You may want to take both, just in case you get a higher score on the SAT.

You might want to wait until at least first semester junior year to seriously consider a chance thread…

^ Absolutely right. There’s no way we an get an accurate picture of who you are and what chances you as a sophomore. Typically people wait until 1st or midway through 2nd semester of junior year (after some testing is done and we can see what sort of “straight-and-narrow” path you’re on). I suggest studying hard for your tests, take hard classes and pursue a couple ECs you’re passionate about. Generic advice, but it’s really all I can offer a sophomore. Try back again in about 7-8 months! Haha

Actually I think it’s good you’re asking early, although I can’t say where I think you’d get in or not, I can give some advice. As you said, keep you GPA up, and extracurriculars but you NEED to get your ACT score up. And honestly I’d say take the SAT as well, just in case your score kicks-ass. If there’s a way for you to do a summer course (Columbia, Brown, Georgetown are just a few of the maaany schools that offer them) could only increase your chances (and with some you can get college credit, like at USC). So keep the good work up, focus on the testing and good luck :)
