Settlement in Rolling Stone case?

According to this article, Rolling Stone has settled the defamation case brought by the fraternity for $1.65 million. I know that I am usually first in line to say that just because something is in a source you don’t like doesn’t make it false, but this is the Daily Caller, which is not the most careful of sources. So all appropriate disclaimers apply. But interesting if true, especially given that they probably paid Eramo less than $1 million at the end of the day.

you think the daily caller made it up?
it may not be popular with some folks on CC but it is legit.

here from a source that has many integrity/trust issues but may better suit those you are worried about offending.

I don’t think the final Eramo settlement was ever made public. She asked for $7.5M was initially awarded $3M but on appeal she settled for an undisclosed amount. I would think she got more than a million unless there was some issue that made a huge reduction a slam dunk. I didn’t follow the trial so don’t know.

I think the $1.65M for the fraternity also seems low considering the amount of publicity that article received in the press.

I think it’s low also HarvestMoon!. Who knows how much they had to spend repairing broken windows that had had bricks thrown through them, or cleaning off graffiti or paying lawyer costs or covering lawyer costs for the young men who were swimmers or had close parallels to the women’s made-up boyfriend. Costs add up fast. I hope the disgusting leap to conclusion days are way past us.

I believe the verdict as to Rolling Stone in the Eramo case was @ 1 million. I think it was 2 something against the reporter. If my recollection is correct, then my experience tells me they settled for something south of that on appeal. I do not know whether this settlement covers any claims against the individual reporter or not. I am also assuming this case does not settle the other case brought by the three individuals, which I think is still on appeal from the dismissal. All that said, given the values established in the first trial the amount seems reasonable for what this case is.

The national fraternity paid for the lawyers. Legal fees for that is a small amount of the Phi Kappa Psi Endowment and income from national chapter dues.

Yes, but as you know the “leap to conclusions” run both ways.

Yes trust but verify.
