Seven Sisters/Cousins

After my college tour with my daughter, I was having a conversation with my uncle about the colleges we visited. When I mentioned Skidmore, he said that when it was female only it was considered one of the “ugly cousins” - an all-female college that was not one of the seven sisters. Has anyone else heard this term?

LOL! So would Sarah Lawrence be included as well?

I seem to recall him mentioning Sarah Lawrence. Can’t remember if he said any others. Probably any northeastern college for women that wasn’t a sister.

Never heard the term, but it sounds pretty insulting!

I’ve never heard the term, and there are so many other women’s colleges (53) that it seems unlikely to me that any school that isn’t a seven sister falls into an “ugly cousin” category. Though there are the “seven sisters of the south”.

srcameron-
I never heard of the “seven sisters of the south”. Had to look it up on wikipedia, finding this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Sisters_of_the_South</a> which says only 2 schools are identified i the 7 sisters of the south. then it lists about 15 others as possibilities. I had to laugh, though. When I first read your term, I thought of the saying “we’re so southern we’re related to ourselves!” :D

^Haha, I didn’t realize it was quite so underdeveloped. It’s just the only term I’ve ever heard related as a way to classify colleges other than the “seven sisters”. I’d originally heard it mentioned from an ASC student on a facebook forum. Next time I’ll be sure to verify before posting :)

ASC?? Arizona State?

The originial Seven Sisters are Barnard College, Bryn Mawr College, Mount Holyoke College, Radcliffe College, Smith College, Wellesley College, and Vassar College. I’ve never heard of the ugly cousins though.

srcameron-
I reread. I think you meant ASC -Agnes Scott College. My bad.

Vassar class of 1972 here. First semester (fall 1968) it was female only. I never heard of “the ugly cousins.” Maybe it was a term the guys used at the male-only schools in those days. But in the early days of coeducation I never heard any of our male exchange or transfer students use that term either. A (cursory) google search didn’t turn up anything. Anyone else find anything?

Hello mahm-
VC '75 here. I recall a few other names for the exchange and transfer male students, but not “ugly cousins” All kidding aside, a lot of my best friends from VC are those transfer male students from the classes of '73 and '74.

Salve, jym!
Those male transfers were a great group (not to be confused with The Group  )! They wouldn’t have thrown around terms like “ugly cousins” (would they have?). Maybe it was the guys back at the eating clubs at princeton. . .hmm. . .I’ll have to ask some of my VC friends if they ever heard the phrase.

I truly suspect thterm “ugly cousin” is synonymous with “seven sister wannabe”. BTW, mahm, where’d you live on campus? Me- 2 yrs Joss, 2 yrs Main

jym–
Lathrop 2-1/2 years, semester away, then townhouse.

Wow- you must have been in the TH’s when they were brand new! I had friends in A-5 and A-7 (if memory serves me correctly ) for the 72-73 academic year. (Aside, sorry to non VC alum who dont know and dont care what we are talking about!)

yes–we were the first tenants. I guess they’re falling apart by now. I have no idea what number I was in. . .
(and yeah–sorry, everyone)
