Any current students with more info on the situation?

Here is follow-up

NYPD has arrested at least 6 suspects

As an alum I would like to see Columbia beef up security in the area

well, it is NYC.

What’s this supposed to mean? NYC isn’t Inglewood or South Central. This doesn’t usually happen.

How do you suggest? More of them, or actually beef up CU security beyond 5’4" 250 pound women “armed” with flashlights and walkie-talkies?

i sense racism.

This is one of those “once in a blue moon” kind of events. Every year something happens to a student but they are usually off-campus (like the girl who was tortured last year).

To be completely fair, there were 2 NYPD officers at every corner of campus for the next 3 days after it happened. No information came out as to where the assaults happened but I suspect they were in the darker corners of campus (especially since it was a Sunday at midnight, these arent that hard to find)

According to Spectator:

“The attacks happened within minutes of each other at West 112th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, West 113th Street and Broadway, West 114th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, West 116th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, and West 120th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.”

“The string of attacks took place between 12:15 a.m. and 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning, all within one block of the main campus”

I am not sure I would call this “the darker corners of campus”. These students could have been walking back to their dorms after visiting other students or studying in the library. As a parent, I am sure I share with other parents of Columbia students a concern for the safety of our kids. Having NYPD situated at the corners of the campus for three days and then leaving wont have much of a long term impact. A greater presence of Columbia security not only on college walk but walking/driving along Broadway and Amsterdam and some of the cross streets near the dorms south of the main part of he campus would at least give a sense of improved security whether real or imagined.

Agreed w/ WiseOWL. 112th and Am is sketchy and 120th and Am is pushing it, but most people should feel very safe at 113th and Bwy for example.

C02 is right, but I’ve seen NYPD vehicles patrolling the area ALL THE TIME. It’s awful that this happened: and it is once in a blue moon.

I am the parent of a Columbia freshman. And while I never mind a solid police presence, I do not feel as though the area around the school is generally unsafe. This was a roving band of 16 and 17 years olds who were targeting students–not exactly a regular occurance. My main issue is the one articulated in the Spectator and that is that the school should have alerted students to the incident right away (and not wait for a couple of days) so that they could exercise some additional caution until the situation was fully resolved.

Things happen. NYC does require more vigilance than many other places, but it also has a lot more security than many other places. We tell our kids to be with others, yet this happened to a group of students. Even if there were more police, they might not have been in the right place at the right time.
