Sexual assault on campus. Where is the outrage? What can really be done?

<p>This article is a recent response to one woman telling her horrifying story of sexual assault, on one campus. The assault itself was terrible, but even more horrifying is the response, or lack of response that seems to be fairly pervasive among college campuses. It is inexcusable that the perpetrators of these crimes are simply allowed to go about their lives, while the victims are left to pick up the pieces. </p>

<p>Why does this issue seem so ignored? What can actually be done?</p>

<p>This should be creating the same level of outrage (not violence, but outrage) that we are reading about in Ferguson. </p>

<p>Why would anyone who has attended these colleges even consider donating more money to them as long as this culture exists? If the problem is within the fraternities (it is in some places, not at others) why would fraternity members from the past not be embarrassed and insist on change? I don’t want to see yet another argument about the pros and cons of fraternities and sororities. Let’s go with the assumption that there are great ones that offer great benefits to their members. And I recognize that this is not just a fraternity problem, but that is an organized and sanctioned group, part of a larger group who all have a stake in the behavior of the others. That should make them an excellent place to start to make a change.</p>

<p>I want to know what action we parents can take. What can students on campus take now?
It needs to happen.</p>

<p>Neither of my daughters schools had fraternities or sororities.
Or football, actually, although at the mid size public university that was a recent development and due to funding and not problems on or off the field.
Consideration and treatment of others, is everyone’s responsibility.</p>

<p>Pretty appalling that it took two years after the young woman reported the assault to a dean for an investigation to be opened.
