Can you take one language to get your requirement and another language just to learn basic conversation?

Say I wanted to take intense German classes for my requirement, could I still take more relaxed Chinese conversational classes?

In a sense, yes. You can take one language for proficiency and begin another language without carrying all the way through to proficiency. In fact, many people do take more than one foreign language (though it can be difficult to fit into your schedule).

But no, the combination you are suggesting would not work. Chinese, Arabic, etc. must be taken as intensive up through the intermediate level (it varies slightly depending on the language). You definitely would not be able to manage both intensive German and intensive Chinese - which would total 12 credits - at the same time.
