Shall I take ACT

I got my SAT scores CR 700 M 780 W 800 total - 2280
Subject tests math 2 800 us history 710
Do I need to retake CR to get a little higher( it may end up getting lower since CR is not my strongest part in the SAt)

More imp- do I need to take the ACT with these SAT scores?
Do any colleges prefer the ACT?Thanks

You don’t need to take the SAT I again or the ACT. You should take another SAT Subject test. Your scores would be great if you could get mid 700’s on another Subject Test.

More opinions.
bump bump

There is no preference for the ACT (nor the SAT, for that matter). Your current SAT score converts to a 34-35 ACT equivalence, so you’d need to get a 36 to make any significant improvement. It is possible you could circumvent subject test requirements at some schools by taking the ACT but since you already have two such scores this won’t help you, either.

You haven’t said what schools you would be interested in. Most require no subject tests (and many won’t even look at them), a few score require two, a few have a strong preference for three (Georgetown, JHU, and Northwestern) and none now require three. However, if you are considering the most selective schools subject test scores in the high 700’s would be helpful, especially in subject tests that align with your expressed interests. If you are considering science, math, or technology-related areas a high subject test score in one of the sciences (Physics, Chem, or Bio) would be useful. If, in addition, you feel you could probably do better on the USH test you might consider re-taking it at the same time.

But beyond this is would probably be more useful to devote time to maximizing your grades, researching your schools (both for your benefit and for essay purposes), and improving application essays.

well i am shooting for a few ivies such as princeton and Brown & Harvard. I will do a science based major and intend to take a science subject test in May. So my USH score is not worth considering? Where are the converting charts for ACT and SATs? Thanks Descartesz for your advice. I am happy with my SAT score but not quite sure if I could do better with ACT since I have never taken it.

[Estimated Relationship between ACT Composite Score and SAT CR+M+W Score](http://www.act.org/aap/concordance/estimate.html)

Note that this concordance is based on the scores of over 300,000 students who took both tests. Don’t make the mistake of comparing score percentiles across tests - they cannot be accurately compared.

If those are the schools to which you aspire I’d have to say the USH score is a bit on the low-side (with the understanding that there are no absolutes here). If you happen to have a 5 on AP USH, however, that will probably do just as well. A strong science subject test score will probably help more, but a strong AP science score would also do you well. (The only problem with AP scores is that they are self-reported on the Common App and not validated directly by the College Board.)

Check the admitted student threads in the Ivy League forums and see what kind of statistics are being posted there. A biased sample, certainly, but nevertheless informative.

In truth, however, this is really just tweaking your stats. You are at a level where other factors, such as extracurriculars, letters of recommendation, and essays (not to mention transcript!) will matter more to these most competitive schools than any improved test scores.

I do have a 5 on the APUSH so I don’t think i will retake the USH SAT… I know any of these ivies are high reaches but i have lots of good ECs, very good varsity athlete and I have done well with academic competitions both at national and world level… still ivies are a reach and i accept that i will be extremely lucky to get in…
