Zero Dark Thirty looks like it’s going to be good, and so does Trouble With the Curve (Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams & Justin Timberlake).

:( Saw Neighboring Sounds. Some good moments, but many excruciatingly slow and boring ones too. We couldn’t find a coin to toss…they’re all being used for tuition.

My son is a film student at FSU. Some of his favorite movies this year were “Safety Not Guaranteed”, “Your sisters sister” and “Jeff who lives at home” - all indie flicks I think.

I loved “Jeff Who Lives at Home” though I saw it on DVD instead of in a theater.

Is it okay if they’re not new movies?
I recently saw (all on dvd):

Tiny Furniture
(deals with the Boomerang issue [kids returning home after college], from the perspective of the young adult - recommended!)

Casino Jack
(Jack Abramoff was extremely successful within the lobbyist system in the 90s - until he wasn’t! I like Kevin Spacey, and enjoyed the movie.)

Jeff Who Lives at Home
(2 brothers with opposite personalities - one intuitive & spiritual, one competitive & materialistic - struggle with life crises - really enjoyed it!)

Higher Ground
(I felt like the movie could have gone deeper, or remained more focussed or something - but I enjoyed it very much. Vera Farmiga is great.)

September 11
(11 film makers direct short films about 9-11. Excellent, overall.)

Page One
(the state of the newspaper biz in the modern era, how to deal with internet news, all in the context of the NYT. Actually one of the paper’s writers, David Carr, was prominent in the film, and I’d love to see a documentary just about his life story!)

50/50
(Joseph Gordon-Levitt is charming, as usual, and I thought the movie was very good. Brought up how life-threatening disease can push the nature of our relationships into clarity.)

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
(I like Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor - but didn’t like this movie - felt the screenwriting was clumsy and weird.)

So… let’s get back to movies.

Some oldies but goodies are returning to the screen in new formats, like the Indiana Jones series, Jaws, and Disney movies.

Have any of you gone to see those?

Also, H and S enjoy hitting the Rifftrax, which sometimes show up on a special night at a local theater. If you enjoyed Mystery Theater 3000, you would enjoy these. They are really bad movies, think Plan 9 from Outer Space, with commentary. If you have a quirky sense of humor, or have males in the family with such tastes, I would check it out.

Have any of you gone to the Fantom events advertised at the theater where they show an opera or even a rock concert? I saw an ad for Quadrophenia, which I would have liked to have checked out, but for an opera goer, there have actually been broadcasts of performances from the Met.

Saw a cute preview last week. Called “Celeste and Jesse Forever”. I think I already posted about it. They poked fun at Cornell for being a lower ivy. It would be amusing for the cc crowd.

Haven’t seen any of those, but I saw Lawrence of Arabia in 70mm at the Cinerama earlier this year.:)

But I’m frustrated with movies lately, they seem superficial and not as interesting as *some *television.
Love the " going to the movies" experience though.
Just saw The Big Year as recommended on Cc, but meh.

Downloaded Singles as H has only seen bits on YouTube.

After seeing the trailer, I do want to see this one.
[Old Goats - Home](http://www.oldgoatsthemovie.com/)

A rather sweet movie that I came across while stuck in bed feeling sick was “Kinky Boots”. A tale of an English boot maker who saves his factory by appealing to a niche market, The acting was better than I expected. It appears the musical adaptation is making the rounds toward Broadway as well. Good for a laugh.

^“Kinky Boots” is wonderful. Chiwetel Ejiofor is a fantastic Shakespearean actor who, in the movie, plays a transvestite character who is very funny but also loveable, affecting, and nuanced.

I can’t recommend the movie highly enough. My college age son owns a copy and has introduced lots of his friends to it.

I watched Detachment last night which is a small film that came out of the Tribeca Film Fest last year. It stars Adrien Brody as a substitute teacher who finds a connection with his students and the teachers in a failing high school. It was really done with a combination of different story lines. A little haunting too.

I just saw “Margaret.” Great cast. Takes place in New York. Main character is Anna Paquin as a senior in a private high school. I think it is a sensitive portrait of how people think at different stages of life, specifically, a teenage girl peripherally involved in a horrible accident; she is contrasted with 2 middle-aged women, one of whom has lost her best friend, and the other (Anna P.'s mother) is juggling her daughter’s situation, her own loneliness, and her career which is possibly about to take off in a big way. It’s sort of tempting to disparage the characters, but the movie does not do that, and I appreciate it’s perspective here - we’re only human, and have basically good intentions.

MODERATOR’S NOTE: Political posts of any kind (not related to education) and responses are not allowed. I had to delete quite a few posts.

hanaviolet - thanks for all the titles and summaries – sounds like an interesting list and I’m going to see if I can find those and watch them.

jym626 – you and I both are interested in Celeste and Jesse Forever. I want to see it to compare to Ruby Sparks (also written by one of the film’s lead actors). If I can fit in 2 this weekend it’ll be Celeste and Premium Rush (the bike messenger movie mentioned in the New Yorker.)

mdemvizi – thanks for Detachment – I was not familiar with it but it sounds interesting.

Hanaviolet, I’m really looking forward to seeing “Margaret.” Did you see the longer version or the shorter version? The longer version is supposed to be much better.

Montegut, we have seen several of the filmed Metropolitan Opera performances in movie theatres. They are fabulous. I’d go to every single one if I could.

If you like a comedy, rotten tomatoes gave this 3 stars and said, “Brisk, funny, and sweetly raunchy”. It did well at sundance and done by graduate of fsu film school(Lauren Miller); she also stars in it along with husband Seth Rogen. It’s called, “For a good time call” check it out on IMDB - only in select theaters right now.

NJTheatreMOM, I meant to mention that “Margaret” was long! I didn’t realize there were 2 versions, but this must’ve been the long one.

“A Shine of Rainbows”, sweet, sweet movie.

“A lonely orphan’s life is transformed by an extraordinary woman who teaches him to conquer grief and discover the magic in nature and himself.”

Saw Celeste and Jesse Forever. It was ok. Not great.

Saw the preview for the sex therapy movie with Helen Hunt for the 10th time…

I’m going to see The Master tomorrow.
