I took the Matt Damon thread as a sign just how emotionally destructive Lisa had become, especially at the last scene with him. She sees the other teacher, realizes Damon is protecting himself, lies to wound him and assure further attention to herself. Jeannie Berlin… a surrogate mother who doesn’t have to take it from Lisa, the way her own mother takes her. In the end, all that Lisa has is her mom, which leads to a kind of surrender in the final scene in the movie.

But hey… maybe I just really like Damon & Berlin Oh, and now I’m even more curious about Yi Yi.

DH and I saw The Master this weekend. I felt the acting was really strong, the narrative was coming together and then … the whole ending seemed to go off the deep end, almost as if they were trying out different endings and left this one in as the finished product… very puzzling. Amy Adams was really strong and she was creepy… was she the one pulling the strings here? I am going to re-read NY TIMES and some of the other reviews.

I think Amy Adams’s character was pulling the strings and trying to keep everyone in line. My question was whether she was a true believer? Did she really buy into everything Dodd said? Did he, for that matter? (I didn’t think so but I wasn’t 100% sure.) I mean, at the heart of it, there was something that “worked” – the hypnosis and emotional manipulation did have an affect on people, but then there was all this other stuff layered on. I must say that as much as I disliked the experience of watching the movie, I can’t stop thinking about it.

Saw The Master. Agree with Lergnom. Great performances, beautifully shot, but did not congeal into any kind of story line, and there was no one to root for.

Not a new movie but very good: *The Lives of Others/i is in German with English subtitles. It is set in East Berlin 1984 and is about the secret police (Stasi) wiretapping of “a successful but possibly subversive playwright.” It is compelling and suspenseful, with a number of plot twists. The film won numerous international awards, including the 2007 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and is available on Netflix.

Not a new movie, but I loved Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. It was a quiet spy movie. Excellent acting. Of course, my DH fell asleep, so some may find it too quiet.

This is going to sound silly compared to the elite movies listed here-but my 14 y.o. and I really enjoyed “ParaNorman”
Animation was very interesting and it was LOL funny. Even though it was a kids movie -I would not take the under 8 set
The language might be a bit strong for some. It was kind of a horror movie for the pre-teen kids.

I fell asleep too. I was watching it with 4 other friends at home, On Demand, and dropped off to sleep after about 15 minutes. I woke up, looked around the room, and saw that 2 more were asleep. It was like we were drugged. We didn’t finish it. I think I might try it again at some point.

Saw “Looper” last night and enjoyed it thoroughly. I’m a sucker for a good time travel thriller and the cast was a fun and recognizable ensemble.

I loved *Tinker, Tailor *but I had seen the old PBS series with Alec Guiness and read the books so I knew what I was in for. Someone at the theater when we saw it walked out about halfway through loudly declaiming it was the worst movie he’d ever seen.

12rmh18–The Lives of Others is one of my son’s favorite movies. He keeps saying I should watch it–now that I know it’s on NetFlix, I think I will.
