Yes, “Frozen River”!! If you read about it, the description makes it sound quite forbidding, but it’s actually terrific.

There are lots of good movies out there; finding them does take some sleuthing. So glad you started this thread.

I second “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen”- LOVED it!

I’m not really into the horror film genre but Let the Right One In is a Swedish vampire film that came out in 2009. Very, very good.

An oldie but goodie that I have on DVD and watch every now and then is Beyond Rangoon. (Not horror)

Am forcing my poor DH to watch Melancholia so that we can talk about it. He watches a little bit at a time. Obviously, not working well for him.

Almost forgot…we enjoyed “Albert Nobbs”…the Glenn Close movie.

The 2010 French film “The Women on the 6th Floor.” Utterly delightful!

“First Position”, a documentary about young ballet dancers taking part in a major competition. We pretty much wanted to take them all home with us.

I was just talking about must see movies to my d and her friend. both of them have been exposed to a large variety of stuff and we were discussing some that we loved, old ones for sure.

For scary we liked The Haunting. It is black and white and has Vincent Price in it. It is so scary! There is no visible monster and no special effects whatsoever. It just scares you though. Of course the remake stunk.

La Femme Nikita is a great one too. I like French films, though have not seen one in ages. I never saw the American version of la femme n-didn’t want to because the original was so good.

The Lady In The Water by Shyamalan(no clue how to spell that) was a hit at my house. It had so many silly parts to it that we just love watching it over again.

For old movies, i really like seeing My Man Godfrey. It is so old that it is like a historic view of what was going on in the depression. I love William Powell, his Thin Man movies are just so fun.

I recently saw Shame and Coriolanus and I don’t understand why Michael Fassbender and Ralph Fiennes weren’t nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. Well, I suppose that I do. But they were outstanding performances.

“Shame” was really good. Looking forward to “Coriolanus” as soon as it’s available on Netflix.

We watched Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy last night.

Completely incomprehensible. But it seemed like a well-made film. :D

Carnage.
Thought it was pretty hilarious and well done.

Sent from my DROID X2 using CC

I got free tickets to see Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which I thoroughly enjoyed. A wee bit trite, but excellent cast (Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, and Dev Patel) and beautiful scenery (shot in India).

On my list is Diane Keaton and Kevin Kline’s new film Darling Companion.

Not new, but available as streaming on Netflix, if you haven’t seen it is Kevin Kline in The Extra Man. The producers of this film dropped the ball in not nominating Kevin for an Oscar for his role, as he would have won, hands down. Hilarious and poignant. Watch for the scene in the car, it was 100% improvised by Kevin when things weren’t going well during filming.

Carnage was really good. I could absolutely see it as a stage play.

Saw “Bernie” today starring Jack Black, Matthew McConaughey and Shirley MacLaine. HIGHLY recommend! Other movies I’ve enjoyed recently include Salmon Fushing in the Yemen and The Guard

Don’t laugh, but we loved the new Dark Shadows film. H and I used to run home from school to catch it when we were kids. The new one was a great homage. A bit campy at times, but setting it in 1972 was perfect! Having recently lost dad/FIL, it was a welcome bit of mindless fun.

H and S are big Marvel fans, and accompanied me for their second viewing. I actually fell asleep during it.

All anxiously awaiting Prometheus, though I think I will spend the whole film in the bathroom, like I did for the original Alien. The anticipation of the face huggers will be just too much for me.

Loved, loved, loved The Namesake. Will have to check out Marigold.

Cabin in the Woods, a lovingly-directed, subtle and thought-provoking film about the true motivations of a zombie hillbilly torture family.

^^^OMG, my son actually wants to see this and wants to take me with him. He told me it was not a slasher film and that there was more to it. I can’t believe you brought this one up. Maybe he’s not just kidding around!

My oldest liked The avengers. I also hear it has good reviews but how can something be called " The Avengers" and not have Emma Peel?

I used to love dark shadows, when I was nine.
The trailer seemed a bit over the top, but perhaps if I can get one of the D’s to go with me.
Want to see Marigold Hotel despite reviews.

Avengers was a lot of fun, and getting in for free with free popcorn and the employee discount on refreshments, didn’t hurt either.

Come to think of it, getting to see it for free makes a lot of movies better.

“The Grey” starring Liam Neeson came out on DVD last week and dh watched it last night while I was in and out of the room. It makes my list of films I do NOT want to see, soon or ever. It got strong reviews, and I like good thriller/action movies. But this was of the “life sucks and then you die” persuasion. A few times when I walked in, dh’s expression reminded me of the way the audience looked after “Springtime for Hitler” in the original “Producers.” Though he claims to have loved it.

I just saw a preview of “Hyde Park on Hudson,” starring Bill Murray as FDR (go Bill!) and Laura Linney as a cousin with whom he has an affair. It’s not due out until December, and it looks marvelous. I’d love to see both of them with Oscar nominations.
