<p>Just saw “Captain Phillips” last night and was really impressed. Considering you know how the story ends it was very suspenseful. The acting was outstanding, especially the Somali actors cast at an open call. Tom Hanks will easily be nominated for Academy Award and may well win his third. It was well directed, the music was outstanding and I really do recommend for all who have not yet seen. Next up on the agenda are the Robert Redford movie and also the move with Daniel Radcliffe about Allen Ginsberg and also based on a true incident.</p>
<p>Saw About Time, very good. Cast includes Rachel McAdams and Bill Nighy.</p>
<p>Bookmama22, I’m looking forward to the Allen Ginsberg movie too. It’s called Kill Your Darlings and co-stars Dane DeHaan, who is a terrific actor.</p>

<p>On my 10.5 hour plan ride, IAD to HNL, saw Iron Man 3, Arsenic & Old Lace (classic), Lincoln, Fruit Miracle (Japanese film with English subtitles about organic apple farming), and last but not least, March of the Penguins (about Emperor penguins in Antartica). It was an eclectic blend of movies, but I really enjoyed all of them, each in its own way. H watched Wolverine and Iron Man 3 and two others.</p>
<p>We had individual consoles and could watch whatever we chose at no charge, using the headset they supplied or our own personal earphones. It sure made the time pass nicely, since it was a flight from 9am to 215pm, including a 5 hour time difference.</p>
<p>HImom, I’ve found the quality of the headsets and the picture to be really abysmal on those consoles. (Although even so, it does help pass the time on trans-atlantic flights.) What was your experience?</p>
<p>bookmama – I agree with you about Captain Phillips. I had seen the previews so many times I didn’t really want to see the movie, but S and I had some time to kill on college tours so we just saw it – really great – especially at the end where you feel everything Tom Hanks’ character is feeling. </p>
<p>Especially intriguing were the previews we saw: American Hustle (when else can you see a preview where both Amy Adams AND Bradley Cooper have their hair in curlers?); Out of the Furnace (both of these movies feature Christian Bale); The Book Thief; and one I called Argo for Paintings (The Monuments Men – Americans rescuing stolen art work from the Nazis).</p>
<p>We saw “About Time” at a preview the other night and thought it was charming. I’m looking forward to “The Book Thief” and “Frozen”.</p>

<p>Just saw this with H. Thought Hanks was fantastic. I heard more than a few tears being shed in the theatre in the final scene when he was with the medic.</p>

<p>For the Red Box, On Demand crowd… I just watched “We are the Millers” with Jennifer Aniston. Hated it. What a horrible movie, my bad, should have done my homework.
Language, sexual references, even the acting was BAD. I should have known with all of the SNL actors in it…</p>
<p>We saw the Sapphires on Netflix. About 4 Australian female singers who performed for the Vietnam troops. Good movie, worth watching.</p>
<p>And Skyfall has made it to Netflix. Good movie even if you are not a James Bond fan. I love Judi Dench.</p>

<p>Caught The Promised Land on cable today. Wow, great acting. I don’t think it even came to our local theaters. So glad I was able to see it.</p>
<p>I enjoyed the Sapphires too. Saw “Mud” and “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” on Netflix this w/e. Thought both were pretty unusual and The Reluctant Fundamentalist quite exceptional - recommend both!</p>
<p>I just saw the worst movie ever! “The Great Beauty”. H raved about it. It was 2.5 hours long! And it was awful! Stupid and boring! And subtitled! </p>
<p>This is one of those movies where, on your deathbed, and you’re told you’re in your final moments, you will regret the two and half hours you spent in front of this movie.</p>
<p>Oh yeah, on my list of movies I wished I’d walked out of.</p>

The Damned</p>
<p>Went to see The Dallas Buyers Club with Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner,
and Jared Letho. McConaughey did an excellent job in his role as a reckless hetro drug user who finds out that he has 30 days to live because he is HIV-positive. Determine to stay alive, McConaughey learns about alternative medications on a trip to Mexico. This is in the early days the epidemic and the movie shows the controversy on how best to treat the virus. McConaughey is superb in this role–it’s a real departure from his Wedding Planner/How to Lose a Guy roles. Similarly, Jared Letho turns in a stunning performance as Rayon, a transsexual who has AIDS.</p>
<p>Went to see Philomena starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan. Very different role from others I’ve seen Judi Dench in and she was very convincing. Excellent film in my opinion and based on a true story.</p>
<p>I also saw Philomena. I had sort of mixed feelings about the movie. I didn’t think the mother’s character was consistent. Sometimes, it seemed as if the movie was portraying her as simple minded and she obviously wasn’t that. While the tension between the journalist and the mother was good in some places, in others it was just overdone. </p>
<p>That said, Judi Dench was amazing in the role. She is certain to get an Academy Award nomination.</p>
