<p>Lone Survivor, American Hustle, and August: Osage County are must sees. I recommend seeing these without paying attention to the hype (if that’s possible). Wolf of Wall Street was by far the worst movie I saw in 2013 (and I saw 32 movies in theaters in 2013, including the horrors that were Man of Steel and Thor 2).</p>
<p>Agree with you, amissy14, about Wolf of Wall Street. I couldn’t sit through it, and walked out of the theater, which I haven’t done in 10+ years.</p>
<p>Dallas Buyers Club - not a light hearted movie but I thought it was very good. I did not want to go see this movie but I was happy that I did.</p>

<p>Saw Lone Survivor yesterday. It was very good. I hope a LOT of people see it and think about what our soldiers are doing over there. My S1 is scheduled to deploy in 6 months. I’m terrified, more so after seeing the movie.</p>
<p>I havent seen anything I thought was bad, but I was * very* surprised Redford wasnt nominated. His was the only performance Ive seen that I automatically thought “Oscar”.</p>
<p>I know she won’t get it because everybody is tired of her, but Meryl Streep flat out hands down deserves the oscar for August: Osage County. It is some of her best work. Critical reception of a movie should not influence the academy’s opinion on acting performances.</p>
<p>I’ve seen a lot of these movies except for Wolf of Wall Street, Saving Mr. Banks and haven’t yet seen August Osage County, This is a year for really outstanding work with so many fine performances. Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine and for Best Actor, I thought Chiewel Elejofor had it for 12 Years a Slave until I saw Dallas Buyers Club yesterday. I also thought Bruce Dern was outstanding and was surprised Tom Hanks didn’t get nominated. I heard that Redford was amazing but I missed that movie also. I loved Llewyn Davis and was surprised it was passed over. I thoroughly enjoyed American Hustle, thought they were a great ensemble but not an amazing movie, not compared to 12 Years a Slave. I thought this was an outstanding film and it was so intense there wasn’t a sound in the audience for a good while after it was finished. I loved Philomena and thought Judy Dench could also give Cate Blanchett strong competition. I thought Captain Phillips was good movie-making, suspenseful even though based on a real event and you know the outcome. Surprised the director Greengrass wasn’t nominated. Absolutely love Lupita in 12 Years a Slave but she may get pushed aside in favor of the new darling, Jennifer Lawrence. She did receive the SAG award however.</p>

<p>I felt that the theme of disfunctional family was overdone in the movie and was a bit cartoonish.</p>
<p>Saw Philomena this weekend and liked it. Judy Dench was great but again, wasn’t over the top on that movie either.</p>

<p>Hmmm. I did see Manchurian candidate and I forget what her character was like. This character is a crazy woman. Just felt overdone to me. i heard that it was based on a play and that came across on screen. Overly dramatic and limited sets. Cartoonish characters</p>
<p>I thought “Oscar” when I saw Tom Hanks in Saving Mr. Banks, but of course he wasn’t even nominated. (I didn’t get to see Captain Phillips.) There is a scene near the end of the movie, where he has traveled to London to visit the author, that was just mesmerizing.</p>
<p>I think they passed on Tom Hanks in Mr. Banks because he is a nice playing another nice guy.</p>
<p>You HAVE to see Captain Phillips, but not because of Tom Hanks. The guys that play the pirates are amazing, especially Barkhad Abdi, who is nominated for best supporting actor. How did they find these guys? I heard they came from Minneapolis, which has a large Somalian population.</p>
<p>According the Amy and Tina, the guy who was nominated was driving a limo when he went to an open casting call.</p>
<p>He must be a very good actor, because I don’t think I could get into a limo, if he was the driver.</p>
<p>Just saw Frozen today and was prepared to just like it, but I have to say I thought it was very, very good. I know they’ve already decided to bring it Broadway, and as I was listening to the music, I realized it was written with the intention of hoping to end up on Broadway… kind of obvious. So then it started to feel like a marketing ploy. But I really, really liked the story line.</p>
<p>I want to see Frozen but Idina Menzel’s singing makes my throat and head hurt. I’d have to plug my ears during Let It Go.</p>

<p>Five of us went to see Frozen - me and four young adults in their 20s (2 male and 2 female). It got a solid thumbs-up from all 5 of us.</p>
<p>Today would have been the day for me to see “Frozen”! 17 degrees, 50 MPH winds and 18" of new snow on the ground.</p>
