Has anyone mentioned Rory McShea was here? Watched it on Netflix streaming last night. Grab a box of tissues, fall in love, and learn to appreciate life.

I loved the Amazing Spiderman in 3D/IMAX. The boys drag me to every superhero movie, and this is by far the best of the bunch. Love the actors in this film, great casting, and great story this time around!

Saw Beasts of the Southern Wild. Amazing.

Saw Moonrise Kingdom. Touching. Some parts are dead-on in terms of the way emerging adults speak and see the world. The intensity of their emotions.

Watched The Hustler on TV (Paul Newman). I’d never seen it before. Didn’t realize it was so dark. But good.

I’m halfway through Midnight Cowboy (never saw it before either). Tried watching Footloose – boy, does that not hold up. Fun to see Sarah Jessica Parker in her pre-SATC days.

We saw Beasts Of The Southern Wild this weekend, too. Absolutely 100% amazing. But take warning: it is an Art Film (and a beautiful one, too). The plot is, um, swampy and really depressing. Major backstory elements are left vague. The depiction of abject poverty is so stark, it makes Slumdog Millionaire look like a Disneyfication. Sometimes you wish they provided subtitles, even though the characters are speaking English.

Nevertheless, at the moment Beasts and Moonrise Kingdom would be 1-2 in my Oscar voting. And if there’s any justice in the world, the nonprofessional actor who plays the father in Beasts will run away with the Best Actor award.

We loved To Rome with Love, especially because we visited Rome in May, so we saw lots of familiar scenery. Also enjoyed Moonrise Kingdom, but it did get a bit silly at times while I was trying to take it seriously.

Now you can watch the sequel The Color of Money!

I didn’t care much for Beasts of the Southern Wild. It isn’t a “fable” as portrayed in the advertising. It didn’t extend into fantasy much at all. And in the end, I don’t see it made much sense.

Do it like this:

(Note, I used a trick to make the quote code not show up as a quote)

Just discovered some very interesting older films by Sam Fuller. Low budget and gritty but dealt head-on with major issues before mainstream films ever did it.
“The Naked Kiss” and “Shock Corridor” were amazing.

I’m a student.

Moonrise Kingdom is the best movie of the year so far.

Beasts of the Southern Wild had tonssssssss of faults but I still loved it. Especially the score.

Yea… my friend and I aren’t the typical Transformers feigning teenagers…

Agree with JHS: Beasts of the Southern Wild is a life-changing experience. Everything about life looks a little different after you see it.

I am surprised by all who liked To Rome With Love. I found if exceedingly silly. I saw if go get really cool on a hot day, but even as mindless entertainment I found it wanting. But it’s always lovely to enjoy things, so it’s my loss.

Moonrise Kingdom and sweet and fairly consistent with the exception of Tilda Swinton and her character. A slight mar in the fabric of the film I thought.

We finally watched The Tree of Life last night. Terrence Malick always mystifies me. I’m thinking on this film. Will probably have to watch again before I am able to say anything coherent about it.

It took me a couple of viewings of The Thin Red Line before I felt like I understood it. Worth it. Not many filmmakers I will work that hard for.

My DD and I watched Days of Heaven the other night. Don’t know how many times I’ve watched that one and always come away transfixed.

I love Days of Heaven. One of my favorites to see on a big screen. Very painterly.
I saw Being Elmo last night on Netflix. A real feel good documentary.

I love Terrence Malick films, but agree that Tree of Life is probably the weakest, though still has some of the beauty of his work.

Badlands is amazing, too, with an achingly young Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek.

Badlands is just brilliant but so very hard to watch, so terrifying and so sad and so beautiful.

Some little known films that I’ve loved:

Wish You Were Here

Starter for Ten

Melody

Little Voice

Took film history courses in college and fell in love with Film Noir. Try to catch some of these on TMC:

Nora Prentiss

Back Street

No Man of Her Own

The Big Heat

Not suprisingly, my son is an avid movie fan and loves the Coen Brothers, among others.

Put me in the cant stand Woody Allen camp.
He used to be funny, when he was poking fun at himself.
Now he comes across as thinking he is more intelligent than his audience and he has their money to prove it.

One of my very favorite directors John Sayles, is working on a new film.

Filmed in four weeks for under $1 million.

Another favorite director, Terry Gilliam really has had to overcome more obstacles than some when filming.

And he’s still trying to make The man who killed Don Quixote. He has recast with Robert Duvall.

I really can’t stand any Woody Allen work after Hannah and Her Sisters.

I don’t think Beasts of the Southern Wild is life changing.

I saw Batman today.

Okay - I’m a big cry baby and heard Beasts of the Southern Wild will have me crying from beginning to end? Truth?

My son and I LOVED Moonrise Kingdom… AND I may be taking him for his first taste of Rocky Horror tonight - I know it doesn’t exactly fall into this discussion of “Noteworthy New Movies” but thought I would share…
