I really like that Rag’nBone Man song, @BunsenBurner. Very catchy. Look back at my post #30. I’m always amazed by how long it takes songs to cross the pond.

I am making my way through the thread now because I have the time… have not made it to your post. Where is @nottelling? Hope she is doing OK.

Been getting into the Wandelweiser composers.

When I visited Nashville my favorite band was The Skallywags. Kristine, Mike, and James play great music and Kristine would walk around asking for requests from time to time. Check them out at www.theskallywags.com.

We had a group I’d never heard of play here in my city. “Pink Martini”. They played some of their music on the radio in anticipation of the concert. I really liked what I heard. I’ve brought them up on Spotify and will likely get an album.

^^^My D and son-in-law danced to Pink Martini’s “Let’s Never Stop Falling in Love” at their wedding reception…

Pink Martini has been around for over 20 years! They’re great. They are also perfect for CC: one of a surprising number of somewhat successful popular music artists with one or more key members who went to Harvard.

There was a female vocalist singing in the movie Cafe Society, which I saw this summer. I waited for the music credits so I could find out who she was. She is my new obsession–Kat Edmonson.

I’m now on a female jazz vocalist kick–a few others I like: Tamar Korn and Ninenna Freelon.

I knew I liked the Carolina Chocolate Drops, but then forgot all about them. They were interviewing Rhiannon Giddens on a recent Dinnerparty Download podcast and her new work is fabulous. Here’s a link to that segment of the podcast in which they ask her to put together a set list for a dinner party. http://www.dinnerpartydownload.org/rhiannon-giddens/ Hers is pretty amusing - it includes both Leontyne Price and Tom Lehrer. She’s an amazing virtuoso playing both traditional fiddle and banjo.

For some reason the link to her own work isn’t available, but here’s a link to the promo for her new album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQycI6wutw0

The beginning of 2017 has been great for popular music, at least.

The XX: I can’t tell how mainstream The XX really are. They are very mainstream in my family, meaning everyone likes them. Everyone should like them. Their current album “I See You” really supports a leap from cult popularity to something more than that. The group is two singer-songwriters, one male, one female, who often collaborate, and an extraordinarily skilled producer who sets their confessional songs about love, sex, and vulnerability in beautiful, sometimes exciting packages. They used to be stridently minimalist, with lots of silences and echoes, but they have outgrown the need to have every song be like that. Find “Dangerous,” “On Hold,” “I Dare You,” “Brave For You.”

Alison Crutchfield: The last few years, it’s like there has been a flood of indie rock with women in their late twenties singing about the kinds of things that happen to women in their late twenties. Not unlike Golden-Age Joni Mitchell, but without the glamor. Courtney Barnett, Laura Marling, Angel Olson, Waxahatchee, Mitski, Margaret Glaspy (whom I plugged a few pages ago), and Solange (sort of). Now there’s Alison Crtutchfield, too. She’s the identical twin of Katie Crutchfield, who performs as Waxahatchee. Their voices and music are pretty close to identical, too – which is a good thing, because they are really fun – except Alison is a little poppier. “I Don’t Ever Wanna Leave California” and “Dean’s Room” have nice videos online.

Definitely second Rhiannon Giddens, too.

@garland , I dig this guy! Thanks for the suggestion!

The single best song on the planet is by Alt J: https://vimeo.com/105230845
One reason I love it is because I listened to it for hours while driving my kid to look at colleges. She had her earbuds in and listened to Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco, haha!

I love this guy, Mike Snow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVWeqAPQUXc

@JHS , Many years ago I worked with a guy in Pink Martini. He was great, he sublet my flat from me when I went on vacation for six weeks. They are very entertaining.
