Sharing itunes libraries

Hi folks, I had a few questions about sharing music (legally) and I know you guys are a bunch of smart cookies.

I have two computers, a mac and a PC, and I have them both set to share and look for shared libraries. My PC has all my music, and I wanted share them with my Mac. However, my library does not show up on my mac. Anyone know whats wrong?

I have both my computers on the same network (UCLA_RES). But they pick up different shared libraries. Are music libraries on Mac only only shareable with other macs? same with PCs?

shared itunes libraries will only show up on computers connected to the same network subnet (which basically means anyone else on your floor, usually). But if you have one computer plugged into the wall and another connected to wireless, they’re not going to be on the same subnet.

I have both of them connected wirelessly, both to UCLA_RES. hm…

hmm that is odd… in that case, I have no idea

You gotta get lucky. Kind of sounds weird, but i have a couple friends that live in my same building and sometimes I see their libraries on itunes, and other times i dont, when i know they are on their computers. Make sure you have your settings set to allow others to view your library.

I also have both a mac and a pc, and i dont think that is the issue here.

Azn, do you share libraries between ur mac and pc?

Ok, so I have a mac and a pc, and my roommate has a mac. We are all connected to UCLA_RES, and we all have our libraries on. My mac and my roommate’s have the same libraries appear on their “shared libraries”, while my pc has a different list. My roommate’s mac can share music with my mac’s library, but not my pc’s. I’ve even tried switching all comps to a different network, but no success

:(

Macs…they just work. ;)

Firewall?

ive allowed intunes to share publicly through my firewall

im not advocating one over the other… im just saying, my mac wont recognize pcs, and my pc wont recognize macs

You also need to add Bonjour (I think the actual process is mDNSResponder.exe) to the whitelist. iTunes uses that for music sharing.

Or just try completely disabling the firewall altogether and see if it works. If it does, then you know where the problem lies.

note: the “remote” app on my ipod recognizes neither one. At home, when I had all three connected to my home’s wifi, i could share between the three

you can try creating an ad hoc network with just your devices and see if it works.

only thing is, you wont have internet when in ad hoc mode if you rely on wifi instead of LAN for internet access.

or…just transfer everything manually via external drive?
