@ itsthejourney, UArts had me at " it’s a $90,000 savings"!

Ha! Yes @octaviar, but it’s only a savings if it’s a fabulous school that he loves and that prepares him for the world after college in the best way possible.

@KellyLJ1, we also had a daughter accepted to Emerson BA and although the program looks great (I love the chance to stay in a castle and spend time in the new LA location) we are having trouble justifying the $50,000+ price tag. We are also concerned that if she decides that theatre isn’t for her, her other options are limited. The final decision hasn’t been made, but I think it will be a BA at a school that offered scholarships and then an MFA in the future if she is still interested.

I also have a son who is applying to a STEM high school in another town for his last two years. Last night I dreamed that I had to go with him and take calculus!..so yes, the stress level is fairly high here too. I’ll be very glad when we can talk about normal things at my house again.

We are headed to U Arts on Sunday. One thing I think is quite different at U Arts than BU or most other programs is that once you are admitted to U Arts, you can take classes in any of the other disciplines they teach. So acting students do dance and sing which they don’t at BU. Then depending what your son’s interests are, he can take classes in art, music, graphic design, etc. My D has a good basic working knowledge of photoshop and newsletter layout and would like to take more classes in graphics as a back-up skill. U Arts also has great connections with theatres in Philadelphia and is smack in the middle of theatre row. (BU has connections too but I don’t think they are physically as close to their partnership theatres; I could be wrong though.)
BU is a great program though and if my D had been accepted we would seriously be considering it too! I don’t want to sound like I am down on it in anyway.

Thanks @dramamom0804. We can’t make it to the UArts Open House but we are going to visit in April. Hope the visit goes well for you and your daughter. I like that at UArts, he would be able to minor in MT. But at BU, he would likely get a richer liberal arts education and a more typical college experience. Not sure which is more important to him at this point.

BU has very close connections with the Huntington Theatre, a professional Equity house. My son chose the Theatre Arts track at BU (one of the two performance tracks), and this allowed him to do a dance minor, take design courses, etc. Theatre Arts students at BU can take plenty of liberal arts courses if they choose to. However, Acting track students have room in their schedule for almost none at all.

I really wish we could’ve made it to UArts Open House this weekend. But we JUST found out today and we are out in the west. And my D has her big dress rehearsal for The Sound of Music this Saturday so we would not have been able to attend anyway, even if we had advance notice.
I have so many questions about the school and the program. I hope I can bombard you with qs after your visit @dramamom0804! We are hoping to visit campus in April too during spring break.

Of course you can @annelisesmom! Although Monday and Tuesday I will be at a conference for my part-time job so I might not be able to post right away. And Wednesday we leave for Chicago to go back to Northern Illinois. Once I am out there I will have lots of time on my hands. D will be in class all day and I think they are even taking her to sleep in the dorm!

Seriously?! That is so cool! We are going to have to live vicariously through you and your D! lol.

Josh703 - the theatres at SMU are really quite cool and the campus is beautiful. The faculty is really caring and fantastic. If you choose it, though, I highly recommend you request the arts dorm. Given the schools you expressed interest in during this process, I think you would like the vibe (as well as the added support of people who understand and appreciate the arts). That’s not to say that the rest of the student body are not aficionados, but the campus does have a strong, Texas-wealthy aura. (And I don’t mean this meanly - I love a campus that built its own Texas sized version of my own alma mater’s beloved Rotunda.)

Re Syracuse. My S is a BFA acting student at Syracuse and he has had a fantastic experience there. He preferred a program where he would have the full college experience, ie, a college campus, sports and Greek life. He has done a semester abroad, the summer drama program in LA, been cast in a production at Syracuse Stage (the affiliated professional theater), among various other things. I can see that it would be difficult to choose between Purchase and Syracuse and so speaking with current students and professors and sitting in on classes would be important in the decision making process. My S is the kind of kid that enjoys varied experiences and so Syracuse was a good fit for him. I would say that the disadvantage of Syracuse is the weather, but my S did not mind it because he is into winter sports. If anyone would like further info please feel free to pm me.

Well, I got my rejection letter from Webster. And for lack of better words, it sucks.
It’s kind of disheartening to only be able to have one acceptance on the list and see people with multiple and adding everyday. But, I am very thankful for Viterbo and honored to be joining their program.

@nomester. One acceptance is all it takes…enjoy Viterbo and good luck to you. You are not alone. While there are a handful with many acceptances there are many more with one or even none. My S only had one BFA acceptance but it was the perfect school for him. Chin up and go get em!

nomester7: you know, it only takes 1! My S didn’t apply to many programs - we just made sure that wherever he did apply, he’d be happy if that school turned out to be the only “yes.” Congrats on Viterbo - it’s exciting! And once you’re there and you get immersed into the program and your life at college, none of those other schools will matter.

Sorry @nomester! My D got rejected from Syracuse today which is my alma mater. They gave us a line about “family connections being so important,” blah blah blah but it’s still a no!

@nomester, It hardly seems fair, and I agree it just plain sucks to watch other peoples lists grow while hearing no’s. The bottom line, this is all temporary. Each kid can only attend one school anyway. By this time next year this will be all but forgotten. (I hope!)

My D just posted this on her FB after a four rejection week:
“There is no passion to be found in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” - Nelson Mandala

dramamom0804, She is wise and brave. She will go far.

@dramamom0804 - I cannot wait to hear all about this weekend!

Hard to believe that after SO much time, energy, stress, worry, etc… that the waiting has ended. 4 rejections within just a couple days…from CMU, NYU, Fordham & Syracuse.
It’s funny how personally they take a rejection, even though there are the same number of acceptances. All in all, I’m happy and relieved. D is currently at the Pace performing arts accepted student 2-day event and had tours scheduled for Fordham and NYU on Monday, just in case- since she was already there. Obviously won’t be doing those now, but Marymount was a Yes, so she can still visit them. Anyone have information on Marymount Manhattan, Pace, U of Arts and CCPA? Hang in there everyone! It will all turn out the way it was MEANT to be! :)
