Sharing, Venting, Supporting Class of 2018

Thanks @dramamom0804! I’m so glad it went well. Sort of experiencing the same thing here. Some bitter disappointments that have hit her hard. But she is fortunate to have some choices. And So many questions. I feel overwhelmed. I’m sure she is even more so. Her schedule and our location out west are such that we cannot attend any of the admitted student arts days. So we will be trying to create our own during her spring break.
I would love to hear more about UArts’ program from your perspective. I will PM you.

We are visiting Syracuse today. At Syracuse Stage now where S is observing a class. Tours and info to follow.

Definitely interested in hearing about Syracuse experience today- it is one of my Ds top choices…

@dramamon0804 So glad to hear your visit went well. I have heard great things about UArts and Philly is a great town

@deamer18 Hope your S likes Syracuse…another great program

Visits and decisions…so exciting :)

Does anyone know anything about the program at Wake Forest?

@txdramamama: My older daughter was accepted to Wake Forest and received the Presidential Scholarship for theater. She visited for a weekend and stayed with a theater student, met with theater faculty and went to see a show. Her impression was that the theater department was very close knit and supportive and the faculty and students were very nice. Her impression, however, was that neither the faculty or the students really expected for any of them to make a long term career of theater. I stress that was only her impression, but it left her with the feeling that she might not get the kind of training that she was looking for. She ultimately chose another school, but it was very hard to say no to Wake Forest!

With that said, you would be hard pressed to find a better overall educational experience than Wake Forest. One of her best friends did end up going there, is very involved in the music program and is doing amazing things and being offered amazing opportunities.

Isn’t that part of the flaws of thinking in terms of “top schools”- kids get sucked into the idea that they need to choose the most highly rated program rather than the best fit. I speak from experience. 20+ years ago I ignored advice and gut feeling to attend a top conservatory- one where the teaching style was to spend the first year or two telling you that you “stink” (yes, I am cleaning that up) before they would give any validation or praise. I hated the program and myself everyday for months, and when I developed a bleeding ulcer (at 19!) my family sat me down for an intervention. Ultimately I chose a different school and a different path (a BA program and directing local theater), and I wouldn’t change the life I have today. But I regret the criteria I used to pick that 1st school

Does anyone know anything about the Santa Fe Univ BFA program? Neither my D nor I can find much, and she got no reply on FB/Unified list. Her audition coach was the one to suggest them, and raves about Jon Jory. I know they re-invented the program a few years ago. They’ve given my D a nice chunk of change, so she’s working through all the possible options, while waiting on her top choice (which she is wait-listed for).

And this is what I’m losing sleep over now as well…my D isn’t at all interested in Tisch, she says it’s too big, not enough attention, the woman who spoke at our info session last summer seemed like she didn’t know what she was talking about, etc. etc…but it’s such a big name, I wonder if, as her mother, I should try to push the bigger name school or whether I should trust her judgment (but she is only 18! and emotional! and …!). Ultimately, financial aid may make the decision for us in any event, but she has completely dismissed her Tisch acceptance and I don’t know what to make of it!

My D did not like Tisch either @sherryjane73. She did apply, because of some of the reasons you mention. It is a big school, and a powerful alumni network and has good training. But she applied because I pushed her to, and I had to agree to let her drop it if she got an acceptance she liked before the Tisch audition. Which she did, so she didn’t audition. But she felt like it was too big, and that there is no way they could know her well enough after a 10 minute interview to properly place her in a studio. This process really turned her off. She also didn’t like the fact that studio work is three days a week and other gen ed classes happen on T/Th.
So, I figured, that is fine and I can’t make her feel like she fits and likes it if she doesn’t. She will have to build her own network and not depend on the school’s network!

I don’t think any parent should be pressuring their child to attend a school that they don’t want to, especially a program like Tisch. However, those two reasons she’s giving shouldn’t be the ones to deter her. If she’s talking about the size of NYU, that’s one thing, if she isn’t interested in a large urban university. But at Tisch, each studio divides its students into small sections so that the number in each class is somewhere in the vicinity of ~15 or so. That isn’t going to be markedly different than any other program, and it certainly allows for lots of attention.

Sounds to me like she has changed her mind about Tisch, and in my opinion, that should be respected but if it’s truly for her articulated reasons, I’d let her know that that isn’t something to worry about.

Good luck to everyone with their decisions!

Syracuse a hit! He is accepting there. It is a very interesting campus. SS is located at the bottom of the hill and then the Quad is at the top of the hill where most of the main campus is found. Beautiful buildings. Where SS is feels quite a bit like DePaul to me with the rest of the campus having an “IU” feel. The VPA building is very old but really artsy and we got to listen to the choir, band, and orchestra rehearsals echoing through the halls as we waited for our tour. The opportunity to study at the Globe, the equity points you can earn, and the Tepper senior semester sounds great. My S loved the class he sat in on. He was pumped. You take 75% conservatory style classes and 25% electives of your choice. You can take those in anything you want and could even minor in something. Yeah I think the weather is going to be a little bit annoying. There are plenty of busses to get around the walk. As a matter of fact as we waited to observe the class. The bus pulled up and prob 30 theatre kids got off! Lol. Our theatre tour guide was a senior acting major and he talked about the different classes and answered a lot of questions. I don’t feel like I have all the answers but if I am leaving something out just ask. It was a good day!!!

I think you should trust your daughter’s judgement, sherryjane73.

@deamer18. So happy for you that your son is excited about Syracuse. The visits can make all the difference :)

@dreamer18. Congratulations on your S’s decision to attend Syracuse. My S is a BFA acting student there and has had some great experiences. He has studied abroad, attended the Drama Department’s Summer in LA program, earned equity points by being in a Syracuse Stage production, etc. The weather can be a bit much in winter but snow removal is a priority and there is no such thing as a snow day off from school. Please feel free to send me a private message and I can try to answer any questions, including what it is like to be a freshman drama student, etc.

Anyone know how many Syracuse accepts to yield 20-24? I wonder what are the chances of getting off the wait list?

They had a “freshman” board up that had pictures of all this years freshman. They were color coded for what specific program they were in. There were about 40 on the board. I was trying to count up the acting and MT but we moved on too quick. I can say there was more of the MT color than anything. This is probably no help what so ever…lol!!!

Just got a call from a FA office (6 am my time-9am for them) letting me know they have lost the proof of ss registration I faxed them a while ago. I’m not mad really, more agitated than anything. The next thing I got was a reminder to come to the new student reception at a different school my son is still waiting to hear back from on acceptance! We applied to relatively few colleges… I’m not sure why we are having such difficulty with the paperwork part of this. I’ve had to resend stuff to three of them. Is this typical?

A lot of these schools seem to have artists running the accounting department.

Haha! I’m still waiting for a promised reimbursement of the audition fee for CMU. My D cancelled her audition after getting into Tisch ED …11 years ago!
