She Is In Love With ChatGPT - NYT

I’m surprised there is no thread on this yet:

I’m like, oh my goodness. On one hand, I can see it in a benign light, but then I think that this sets up completely unrealistic expectations. What if my kid’s first relationship is with Leo? No person will ever be able to compete with perfect responses all the time. Inexhaustible responses. Leo never has a bad day. Leo never is holding a grudge from the argument about bills, etc.

I asked D25 at dinner tonight if anyone she knows does this. She does not.

What do you all think? I’m not a big pearl clutcher or worry about the kids these days, but this is strange new world times a billion for me.

I read this over lunch - had to stop a few times, as wow just wow. I was struck by the strong need for connection not getting met even though the main subject is a student, married, has friends. I found it sad, but also trying not to judge as not my business

It’s very concerning that these types of uses of AI may make people have worse social skills and unrealistic expectations of friendships. I’m sad for her H and people in her life.

Yes, when I first read the article, I was stuck on the fact that she was engaging in something “not real.” (Maybe because I sit here and type words onto a screen to people I do not know and will probably never know.)
But by the end, I found the AI portion of it not as problematic for me. I’m actually less concerned that it is a computer program she is engaging and more about the frequency and expectations for emotional attachment.

This reminds me a bit of the plot of the 2021 German movie I’m Your Man, starring Dan Stevens (British actor from Downton Abbey who actually speaks German.)

That was my first thought!
