A while back I saw a discussion on here regarding buying full sized comforters/duvets instead of extra long twins. Will that work on an XL bed? It seems like the choices for XL bedding are pretty darn limited, and the poster (I thought) was suggesting that the full size would work well and would go to the floor.

We could only find two XL comforters, both ugly. We got D a full-size comforter, and it has worked fine.

Yes, that will be fine. You will want XL fitted sheets but for comforters, flat sheets, duvets, etc. you will be fine with a full. That’s what I used.

I also have a twin comforter that worked well enough.

Does anyone know how warm they keep the dorms? My son’s school is in a very cold climate but the dorms are so warm the kids open the windows at night. I’m really looking to see how warm of bedding will be needed. Thanks for any insight…

Jojoba, we bought a “medium weight” down comforter from Ikea. It worked well for D in Chicago

My daughter used a full/queen duvet on her twin XL bed at camp and it was fine. She likes having the extra length on the side to hide the junk stored under the bed! We also bought a medium weight down comforter for her to take to Boston. She spent a couple of nights in her school’s dorms this winter and said it was not too warm, but did feel stuffy. This from a South Florida kid who uses a medium warmth down comforter year round, with the thermostat set at 78!

Also, regarding sheets, we got nice twin XL sheets from Macy’s. Another good source is The Company Store. My d has skin allergies, so we had to get 100% cotton, high thread count sheets. She also was fine with some 100% jersey knit sheets we found at TJ Maxx.

Every dorm is different and room temperature doesn’t always vary with climate the way you would guess. DD was frozen half way through the winter in one room, until she and roomie looked at the top of the ceiling height window and found it open 3 inches. IMO, lighter weight layers are good. It can be very hard to heat dorm rooms consistently. An extra blanket can come in handy. My kids loved the sweatshirt weight small blanket/large throws with the school logos. They could use them while studying or sleeping and they make a great high school grad. gift. They have held up well with lots of washing. Have fun getting ready.

Kohl’s had a great selection online last year and shipping is often free if you sign up for their email list.

S1’s room (in Wisconsin) was so hot that he never used the heavy comforter. Next fall I am going to send along a “down alternative” blanket and a lighter weight comforter.

Last year the XL bedding started to dribble out in May/June and then at the end of July there was an explosion of options. By then I had already panicked and made my purchase. There was no way I was going to get S1 to have a discussion about bedding/towel colors so my advice is to increase your flexibility by getting your sons to give you 2 color options - staying away from some of the dark solids that don’t look so attractive after they have been drooled on for an entire school year!
