Shepherdstown is very nice, but I don’t know much about the school itself.
Your’re a MD resident, right? If you’re going to live on campus (not commute), then St. Mary’s College of Maryland at in-state rates would cost about the same as Shepherd at out-of-state rates (or slightly more). That’s comparing full sticker prices. You should be more likely to get aid from an in-state public school than from an out-of-state public school … so St. Mary’s might be cheaper for you (unless you could commute to Shepherd).
They are both small, state-supported schools. However, based on the stats that US News collects (retention & graduation rates, class sizes, admission selectivity), as well as reputations, I think St. Mary’s is a stronger school (unless Shepherd has a specific program you want that the smaller SMCM does not offer).
Thanks! I live 8 miles from Shepherd (our county used to be eligible for in-state rates due to proximity, but that ended a few years ago, sadly), so I would be a commuter. I did check out St. Mary’s, and they would be just a bit cheaper, probably, because Shepherd offers basically no aid. My parents really would like me to go to Shepherd because I could live at home and commute, but I’m not all that certain of the quality of education there. I’m a little torn between wanting to commute, and wanting to go to a school that has a lot of great opportunities for undergrads. Unfortunately, I don’t live within commuting distance of any other universities.
