Shipping Boxes from Student abroad Back to US

My D is currently abroad in Copenhagen, and scheduled to return to the US in May. She will be travelling in Europe before she returns home, and does not want to lug around all of her luggage. What is the best way for her to send some items home? She looked at First Luggage, which gave her a quote of almost $400 to ship 1 small suitcase and a medium box, which seems high to me, but I may be totally out of touch. The items that she will be shipping ahead will not be needed right away in the US, so the shipping time does not have to be quick.

Any advice is appreciated.

My daughter finally mailed things home from India/UK rather than paying overweight baggage fees, but she used whatever the local postal service was,

Check into DHL and UPS. They both do international shipping–I don’t know how expensive it is, though.

I am bookmarking this thread. I was under the impression that shipping boxes internationally was cost prohibitive. My daughter is moving to Copenhagen in August, and we are just going to pay the additional luggage fee, but I’m hoping to learn of other options.

My D1 and her friends were in a similar position in 2012 after studying at Oxford… They found they best option was to leave luggage at a storage site near the airport and then return to London and pick up the luggage before flying back home.

Agree with Sally22- extra baggage fees are usually the least expensive option, at least from the UK. However, you can do a cost check with unibaggage.com just in case.

We may have figured out a solution. She has some friends who are coming home directly from Denmark, while she travels a little more. She is going to see if one of them can take her extra bag, and we will pay the difference, and I can meet it at the airport in the US.

When DD comes back from living abroad, my plan is to go visit her, take only carry on and bring back her extra luggage on my ticket & get a trip there, too! More fun that paying hundreds to the postal service.

When my D did a semester abroad (Greece) it was cost prohibitive to ship boxes. As some students accumulated more “stuff” as they bought things while there, they ran out of luggage space. The sponsoring U had donation boxes so the departing students could lighten their load in a positive contribution to the host community.

OP, my son was in the same position after a summer in Italy. Mailed 2 good-sized boxes home from an Italian post office in Florence for about $100. Took about a month for them to get here.

When our kid was abroad, we went to visit. We brought a suitcase full of Christmas gifts for her, and her friends (mostly candy), and took a full suitcase home of things she really wasn’t using but wanted. When it was time for her to leave, she invited her friends over, and had a give away…shoes, clothes, books, kitchen stuff, school, supplies, anything that she hadn’t packed up for her trip home. It was a big hit!

She traveled with one smallish suitcase and a backpack. And she traveled many thousands of miles for six weeks with that stuff, with no problem.

I shipped a medium, flat-rate box (13-5/8" x 11-7/8" x 3-3/8") through the US Post Office to Korea and it cost me $60. I think the extra bag fee is a bargain!
