Shipping household items

As many of you know, my dd moved to NYC quickly for a new job. She now has an apartment in Astoria (yay!). She schlepped most of her clothes out with her but did not take any of her other belongings. These include dishes, silverware, towels, etc. What is the best way to ship items? There is no hurry so they can go by truck. Any suggestions? I had to laugh as she asked me to ask the wise people on CC!

Would it be cheaper for her to buy new in NYC?

D1 ended up sending almost all her belongings via the U.S. Postal Service or Fed Ex. She transported her mattress and two large paintings (her own) with a trucking service. I suggest figuring out how much there is to ship and then doing a search on the Internet. You’ll find places that will be able to provide price quotes instantly. Then you can compare those prices to the post office’s per pound rates and to buying new in New York City.

FedEx Ground. Buy a sturdy moving box at Home Depot or a mailbox store. You can ship about 50 pounds for around $50 in a medium box. But she has to have a way to get the box from the door to her apartment. If she lives in a third floor walk up then you need a different method.

If time doesn’t matter much, ask a couple moving companies about their prices for small moves. They will put her little move on a truck with several other moves. The last time I did that, it was way cheaper than hiring a U-haul and driving it myself.

Open the box and carry stuff up in manageable portions. Have a friend help by watching the open box.

Hopefully, she has mail security in some form at her apt if you are shipping to her home (a doorman/secure package area). Shipping can be tricky, otherwise. Many in this situation use their work address for smaller items if someone can be there to accept a package for them. Tough if it is one huge delivery.

Glad she has a place.

Yes, it most certainly would be cheaper to buy new but her employer will pay up to a certain amount to have it moved. Her fiance can carry things for her. I’ve need to find out about where she will have it delivered. I think I will check out moving companies. FedEx sounds reasonable too.

When my daughter had her mattress shipped, the freight company at this end called to find out when someone would be at home to take delivery.

If her company is paying, have movers do it.

If it is just a few things, send several smaller boxes.
