Shipping packages to pick up later?

Really dumb question here.
D is in college in Boston and will be doing an internship in NYC in the summer. There are about 3 weeks between when she has to leave campus and when she starts up in NYC, so she will be coming home, which means she has to ship stuff home and then ship it back out to NYC for move-in.

We were thinking - could she ship her stuff directly from Boston to NYC and have it held and then pick it up there for move-in, versus shipping from Boston to Chicago and then turning around and shipping Chicago to NYC. The place she will be staying does not accept packages. FedEx and UPS offer a hold service, but will only hold for 5 days from receipt, so that won’t work. Has anyone ever had this situation and come up with a work-around or way of shipping something to be held for a few weeks? Thanks in advance.

Do you or your D have trusted friends/relatives living in or near NYC in that period who can and are willing to receive and hold those packages for those three weeks?

If so, this a better and IMO, safer course than relying on mail/parcel companies to hold them for that long a period.

Our local UPS place was willing to hold boxes before shipping when we had a similar situation. Could that help? or a combination of holds before and after shipping?

The UPS stores in Boston do have storage (I had inquired but did not use it) - they would most likely store and then ship on the date you request?

pizzagirl-I sent you a PM

When D2 moved out to LA, we used this company. Looks like they have services catering to college students:
http://www.upack.com/moving-services/student.asp

The UPS store on my D’s campus would pick up boxes and store them over the summer, to be delivered back to a specified location on a specified date. I don’t see why this couldn’t be done for a shorter period. It wasn’t cheap, but less than shipping them twice. Maybe your D’s campus UPS also offers this service?

How much stuff she is going to ship? I sense it won’t be much. The UPS holding suggestion would work.

But, if it is a lot, you can rent warehouse spaces in NYC to ship to for storage until your arrival. When our family moved out to the west coast, I shipped and stored over 100 boxes. UPS also gives a discount on shipping if you ship over 10k lbs to a single destination.

I second (or third) the UPS store. You may have to get a mailbox there. Even so, get it short-term, like 3 or 6 month rate.
