Has anyone used Dormco to ship their kids stuff to college?
@JeanneAP: I cannot answer your question other than to suggest calling the University of Vermont & ask where to ship student packages prior to arrival on campus.

Not familiar with Dormco, but places like Bed, Bath & Beyond or Target will ship online or local purchases directly
to the school. Most have free shipping.
Since the shipments are initiated and insured by the retailer, I’m not sure if there’s an additional advantage to using a dedicated company, which I assume charges for their services.
Schools WILL have a policy about receiving packages (when, where and how) so be sure to check.
What are you planning to ship? Crunch the numbers…it might be cheaper to order and have shipped from amazon or some other online vendor.
Our kid went to college 3000 miles away…and we shipped nothing.
If you are going to fly up with him, it might be cheaper to pay for two checked suitcases and take the immediate essentials in those…then shop in Burlington for the rest.
When you order through Bed, Bath & Beyond, you can order when you wish and have them hold everything for the stated delivery date you give them (heeding the info above about college and university parameters for acceptance of items for students).

These will need to be packed very carefully to prevent breakage, especially a computer screen. Does he have something to hook the turntable to?
I would that you wait to send these items until after your son is moved in and you return home from the move in time. That way, you will be able to find out where to send these types of items. Schools have varying ways for packages to be shipped.
None of these are essential…so better to wait until you have the shipping details…and also know of the dorm room can even accommodate the Xbox, screen, etc.
On your other thread, you mention two Xbox, a turntable, a computer screen and some record albums. Since none of these are essential items, I would suggest that you find out the shipping of packages protocol for this school while you are there and ship when you get home…rather than ship in advance.
That way you will know exactly what to do…AND your son will be there to receive the packages.
Each school is different. If they have the storage space, they will give you a date of when you can begin to ship.
You also can order items from Bed, Bath and beyond and they will ship to the local BBB near your school.
Most dorm rooms don’t have a lot of space. Add a roommate or two and they will be crowded. Does he plan on doing any studying? Two Xboxes?
You also need to plan for snow supplies, winter coats and boots.
My son will begin attending UVM Fall 2019. We live in New Orleans, and I would like to ship most of his things to UVM in August, then fly with him up there the day before he moves in. Does anyone know if this is feasible? Have you used a shipping service to do this? Does UVM accept shipped boxes a week or two before the move-in date? The thought of driving up there sends me into a tailspin.
One more thought. Your son can get an estimate on the costs for shipping. Remember…if you ship it TO Burlington, you will need to also ship it back to NOLA when the school year ends. So…consider the costs of shipping this extra stuff back and forth and back and forth.
I would not ship x boxes… Maybe see how his first semester grades are before giving him the tools to self distract so easily.

I will say that he has come a long way since that post! Much more motivated and excited about Engineering at UVM. He is more focused as well since he began taking medicine for his ADHD. Is it uncommon for a student to have an Xbox in a dorm room?
Uncommon to have an Xbox in a dorm? Well…some kids have them…but most don’t…the vast majority don’t.
You want your kid to get out of their dorm room, not disturb their roommate gaming at all hours of the night, not spend time gaming when he should be studying, etc.
College has enough distractions…I personally would not send one Xbox…nevermind two…and I would not mail a computer screen.
If my kid wanted this stuff mailed, my kid would be researching the costs…and he would be paying them. This isn’t going to be inexpensive shipping. Something like a computer screen and a turntable need to be well packed to prevent breakage.
I would say NO until after I saw the first semester grades. Then…decide if the cost of shipping is worth it.
Like i said upstream…this isn’t a one time cost…back and forth, back and forth.
Thanks for your input, thumper1. I was under the impression the students stored their items at a storage facility in the summer in their college town. Didn’t realize we would be shipping things back come May. That will increase the costs substantially.
Well…some kids do store things for the summer…BUT…won’t he want his Xbox at home for the summer? That’s three months consecutive at home with no stuff.
Is that what he wants? Or will he want to purchase another for home…adding to the costs.

Regardless…you need to see how much this will cost…I shipped three ceramic pitchers from Ohio to CT. They had to be wrapped well to prevent breakage, and boxed. I took them to a place to have this done. The cost was well over $100…and what you are sending is far heavier, and bulkier. It’s going to be costly.
Good point. Might just be cheaper for him to get a turntable through Amazon or Target once he gets up to Vermont. Same with a computer monitor.
Just don't send lots of anything up, is cost an issue as you are sending him so far away to a state school? Why UVM?
Will your son be using a laptop? Why does he need a computer monitor?
