Currently I’m scheduled to take the American Government and Politics, English Lit and World History AP tests. I’m going to NYU in the LS program and I’m going to be a foreign language major. Should I not take the AP tests? After Accepted Students Day I’m pretty sure that it won’t do me any good to take the tests, but I want a second opinion before I cancel them.

Thanks so much!

Languagegirl,

All three of the AP classes you referred to can receive credits from NYU CAS (if this is the school you will be moving into after 2 years AND if you score a 4 or 5 on each). AP credits GENERALLY do not exempt you from required courses but will give you extra credits to fulfill a portion of the 128 credits you need to graduate with a bachelor’s degree from NYU CAS.

Here is the info about AP/ college credits and the NYU LSP (from the NYU website):

Will I get credit from Liberal Studies for AP classes and college courses?
NYU accepts AP credit if you receive a 4 or 5 on the AP test and accepts credit from most colleges if you receive a grade of B or better. Although advanced standing credits may be useful towards the overall 128 credits needed for the NYU degree, they generally do not satisfy specific NYU and Liberal Studies requirements. EXCEPTION: A 4 or 5 on the AP test for Calculus, Statistics, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry will meet the general math and science requirements. Students should also note that the several undergraduate schools of NYU have different policies on whether AP or Advanced Standing credit will be accepted in fulfillment of school and/or major requirements.

Also, a link about which AP credits are given at NYU CAS (Scroll to the bottom of the page):

[NYU > CAS > Bulletin 2010 - 2012 > Admission](http://cas.nyu.edu/object/bulletin1012.ug.admission)

Take them. You can still get credit. It’s only 1 month until AP tests anyway. Just stick it out. It will be worth it because you can fulfill certain elective requirements. Good Luck!

I check that link evolving gave me, and for the three courses I’m in it says there is no NYU equivalent. Doesn’t that mean it won’t fullfill any requirements?

Thanks!

Language, It means that the 3 classes do not replace specific NYU classes. But you can use them to replace elective credits.

Say, you get 4 college credits for each of the three AP exams you score a 4 or 5 on. So, you get 12 credits toward the total 128 credits you need to graduate from NYU. That means you only have to take 116 credits while in residence at NYU to meet graduation requirements. If you take a 4 credit course during the summer or two semesters of 18 credits total (average is 16 credits for students), you possibly can graduate in 3 1/2 years from NYU and/ or take lighter loads for some semesters at NYU. Of course, you must make sure you have all credits required not only for graduation, but also for your major.

You are fortunate, my son took AP English LANGUAGE and he got a 5 on the AP exam for that subject. But it is not one of the AP classes that receive ANY credit whatsoever from NYU.

ohh ok I understand now! Thank you evolving!
