Shooting in Colorado at Batman Screening

What has our world come to? Possibly 14 people dead and 50 injured. So terrifying!
[14 dead, 50 wounded in shooting at Colorado theater, police chief says - CNN.com](http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/20/us/colorado-theater-shooting/index.html?hpt=hp_t1)

This type of thing is terrifying, All I can say is WHY? WHY? WHY? Why hurt and kill so many innocent people, We live thousands of miles away but my heart goes to each and every person affected but this act of stupidity.

How awful! Imagine being in a dark movie theatre and suddenly you hear gunshots. My God.

This kind of event is becoming all too common and I suspect, as we hear more, we will find that, like so many of these things, it is a result of someone slipping through the cracks of the mental health system.

It’s just heartbreaking! To do something so innocently as go to a movie and fear for your life?! There are, of course, so many reports out there, but it has been said that one of the 50 who was injured is a three-month-old child. I’ve also heard conflicting reports that the youngest dead is either six or nine. I just can’t fathom such a thing!

James Holmes, 24, of North Aurora, CO has been arrested. According to news reports, he had Tennessee tags on his car. That made me wonder if he’d either been in the service (Fort Campbell is here) or is currently in the service. Just speculation on my part.

From reports I heard on the radio this morning, people in the theater were slow to react at first because they thought it was a part of the movie or some sort of “stunt”. Good grief.

All I can do is pray without even knowing what to say. How awful.

Guess where my 19 year old went to last night?
A Denver area midnight showing of Batman.
(He’s fine.)
It’s his mother who still has palpitations.
The horror.

Another mass shooting to add to the long list of mass shootings in this country. We will never learn. :(

It’s particularly tragic because these types of events are so common in the US and could be easily avoided. So glad I’m a Brit.

Splashmom: D & I were just watching the Today Show coverage and when they mentioned the TN plates we both said “oh c$#p!”

According to the GMA website: "A San Diego woman identifying herself as James Holmes’s mother spoke briefly with ABC News this morning.

She had awoken unaware of the news of the shooting and had not been contacted by authorities. She immediately expressed concern that her son may have been involved.

“You have the right person,” she said.

“I need to call the police,” she added. “I need to fly out to Colorado.”

For a mom’s first reaction to be that, makes me think that EPTR is right and it was a mental illness issue.

Prayers going out to all the victims & families. Horrible.

Emilybee what should we be learning?
Not to let people in through the side door at a movie theatre?

This is so horrible. I wasn’t happy when my son left the Denver area in April to move back to Philadelphia because I felt that he was so safe and healthy in Denver. You never know… He could have easily been at that theater if he had stayed in Denver.

Could be. Or it could be that she knew he had obsessively violent political views. Or both.

I always wonder about the parents/siblings too when you hear about a report like this – how do you go on with your own life if your child/sibling does something so horrible. Very disturbing the report above of the Mother’s reaction…

Very sad. :(

How awful and horrific. You don’t go to the movies and expect that you might not return home. You don’t allow your kids to do something so innocuous and expect them to be killed or injured.

The news is now saying that his apartment is booby-trapped. This was a well planned crime.

SplashMom, According to the Today Show, he has no record of military service. Also no criminal record except for a traffic ticket. Not on any watch lists either. So sad.

The moms reaction can be explained by her dealing with a son with mental illness issues.

This story has made me feel anxious since I heard of it. Very tragic.

I was just watching the news and they were mentioning that one of the young women killed had closely escaped another mass shooting elsewhere. Her last twitter post before going to the movie was about how she was reminded that we never know how long our time on earth is.

My son and his friends bought tickets to an 8:00 a.m. showing late last night and left this morning with no knowledge of what has happened. I will be anxious until they return.

It is being reported that the shooter had just withdrawn from the University of Colorado medical school.
