Okay, so I have a dilemma. For the short answer, should I be quirky and honest or should I take the less risky route? For example, question 1 (these are not my real answers…I’m not THAT quirky)

What would you do with a free afternoon?

OPTION 1: I would eat spaghetti while wearing comfortable white shoes. Then, I’d stare at my favorite wall for a few hours.

OPTION 2: I would play with my little brother and help him do his math homework so he can succeed.

I really don’t know what they’re looking for here. Help!

I would definitely suggest answering those questions honestly. Their purpose is to offer Yale some insight into YOU, not the person that you think they want you to be.

Those both seem pretty manufactured. Quirkiness is great, but obviously only if it comes off as genuine. You want to be real rather than eccentric.

Think about it this way: does Yale want someone who stares at a wall for hours? They might see you’re not being serious, but then you didn’t answer their question did you?

Your second answer could be a lot better if you changed the phrasing. Instead of saying “so he can succeed”, which is rather vague, say exactly why you want to help your brother. Answer honestly
