Prompt: Although you may not yet know what you want to major in, which department or program at MIT appeals to you and why?

Pretend I want to major in mathematics. When I’m answering this question, am I supposed to talk about why I like mathematics and want to major in it, or why I like MIT’s mathematics program? Or both, or doesn’t matter?

Which department or program at MIT appeals to you, and why?

Tell them you are interested in the mathematics department, and tell them why. If you are interested because you like mathematics a lot, then tell them why math interests you. :)

I had a similar question with regards to this prompt when I first wrote mine. I was going to first say how interested I am in technology and the such, but after re-reading the question, I decided to talk about the aspects of the Course at the Institute that I’m interested in. In other words, I answered the question.

I think this question is mainly an opportunity for you to show the admissions people that you have seriously looked into the school–you aren’t simply applying because of the 'Tute’s reputation. After all, a blurb about how much you love math could be sent to any college.

I would do some research on the math department, perhaps email a student or professor? But, if you are applying early, it may be too late.

emmitt hit the nail on the head–MIT wants to see that you’re serious about the school, so they want to see that you’ve done your research into it. Basically, why MIT?
