Short-term Wi-Fi access options in NYC?

Greeting all. D is going to be doing an internship in New York City over the summer and will be staying in an apartment that has no TV. Not having a TV doesn’t bother her so much but being Internet-disconnected will, especially in the evenings. I was told that Time Warner is the big fish in that area.

Aside from running to Starbucks every evening to catch a WiFi signal, what are the options for setting her up with Wi-Fi access in the apartment for approximately 9-10 weeks?

Full disclosure: D does have a 3G smartphone so theoretically she could set up a 3G hotspot, but we were told at the Verizon store that watching movies or streaming video could eat up an enormous amount of the GB data allowance (not to mention being a severe drain on the phone battery so plugging in the phone to a charger would be a must). And a friend told me that accessing Facebook through 3G can also quickly use up one’s data allowance although I’m not sure why.

I just arranged Internet access for my son for his internship in NYC this summer. Went through Time-Warner with no installation fee and less than $30 per month. No penalties for cancellation.

Is her residence located within a block or so of a major university? If so, she may be able to access the public wifi access provided by those institutions.

Try Clear internet. I believe its $30/month. You can buy the equipment at Best Buy or they can ship it to you.

A few years ago, I did a summer internship in another major city, and I didn’t have Internet access and was on a very tight budget and so couldn’t afford any supplemental access. To be honest, it didn’t really bother me, to my surprise.

She does have internet access with her smart phone, so she can check and respond to email and facebook messages. She can plug in her phone. And, she can get out and do stuff:

Thanks for the link Soprano - I passed the information on to my S. He will essentially be a “starving artist” this summer so I am sure Free in NYC will come in handy.

N’H’CTMom- I think I’ll look into Clear Internet. I like the idea of a 4G stick, plus the portability and the prices look reasonable.

Thanks Kennedy 2010 for the Time Warner tip. If for some reason we choose to steer clear of Clear it’s nice to know one can do Time Warner without being stuck with a contract.

And sopranomom92- I’ll forward to the link to D. Looks good.

Check out if her phone can be used as hot spot from the cell phone company. You should be able to cancel the subscription any time.
