Shortcut to assessing "competitiveness" of various competitive full tuition or better scholarships?

I know someone who got the full ride to USC and she is, in every way, shape and form, the real deal.

USC[ Southern Calif] doesnt give full rides.
The most they offer is Full Tution + $5000

Maybe she got competitive merit money>

uh, no.

What about general or departmental scholarships on top of tuition + $ 5 k? It doesn’t really matter how you cobble together multiple types of scholarships… If it adds up to full ride equivalent, it is all a matter of semantics. Doesn’t matter how you get there…

guys, get real.
USC does not offer merit scholarships than include R + B., +++ / i.e full rides. period.
Other U’s do.
Have we not all of parents saying"my kid got a full ride at HYP."… etc before?
this sounds like a great kid got a well deserved Mork Scholarship.
Perhaps her family had an EFC =0.
And received additional FA.

that include…
have we not all heard of parents…
this sounds like a great kid who got…

carry on.

But please try to remember- USC , like many other highly competitive U’s- does not offer full rides.

Lucky to find this board. I have some questions about DD17. Her PSAT SI is 224 and no SAT, since she is taking new SAT. Should be one of the top in her class, and will have 15 AP classes by the time she graduates. excellent EC plus leadership throughout high school. Wants to study Econ/ Pol Science. Any good (ivy if possible) schools we should look for merit based on her interest and stat? Appreciate your insight! DH and I both got scholarships when we came to America for graduate schools, and like to see her do the same – we have been donating back to our schools too!! And also at same time, we don’t know the college process here much!

@SincererLove , I’m no expert, but from what I’ve read on this board as well, Ivy League schools don’t give merit aid. They don’t have to. I had the same misconception when I first started reading here.

@MotherOfDragons is correct, no schools in the Ivy League offer merit. Some selective schools do offer a very limited number of merit scholarships, but they are very very competitive. Those schools include Duke, Vanderbilt, UNC, Notre Dame, UVA and WashU. I’m sure there are some I am missing.

@sincerelove You should start a new thread. No merit scholarships at Ivy League Schools and limited (very) scholarships at other top 20 schools.

Check out this list and look at the category “% non-need based aid” after you run the Net Price Calculators (NPCs) for HYPSM type schools to see if you qualify for financial aid.
