Shoud I stick to state schools?

So this has dawned on me; I suck. Alot. I’ve always wanted to go to a nice college and/or LAC but more and more it seems like a far away dream than a viable reality. I have so many things working against me its crazy.

I am moving to another school as a senior.
a) From an AP school to and an IB. --can’t get IB diploma
b) To a weighted school from an UW school --GPA will be messed up
c) Not on track to take the hardest classes because of requirements

Never got a chance to really develop really good EC’s because I’ve moved so much
a) and will move again. --most are one-two year stints. No leadership.

My GC at new school hates me.
a) and is incompetent. No, seriously, I would be surprised if he knew what the common app was.

So my EC’s suck, my grades are subpar because of the moving around and there is no one to help me out for admissions. Did I mention I’m asian (damn)?

Quick Stats
3.87 UW GPA
Rank: 30/270 (11%)
ACT: 27 (my first and only time so far)
Classes: Hardest offered each year
ECs: XC (captain) and track, academic team, math team, speech/debate, was a page, won the class VFW essay, band/orch, internship somewhere this summer, going abroad for 3 weeks,
Work: Worked for parents since I was young, weekends and whenever needed.

Should I stick to a state school?

It depends on which state schools you’re talking about. There’s a big difference between Berkeley and Montana State. Also, you could definitely get into some LAC’s. They may not be as good as Williams, but they will still have all of the benefits traditionally attributed to a liberal arts college such as small class sizes and close relationships with faculty. Do some research, and I am sure you will find some schools that are good fits for you.

Bring the ACT up a bit, and you’ve got a good shot at some good colleges, though that depends on your definition of “good”.

Well I live in MN. They are decent schools and I am sure to get in with little tuition. I was looking at Bates, Colby, Carleton, Macalester, etc. before I had my depressing epiphany.

You could always go to a state school and progress quickly and then transfer to a really nice school.

Make your decision after you get your letters, it’s much easier to know your options.

no reason not to apply to non state school, at worst you lose the fee.

I’ve been told the page thing really helps. So if you get your ACT up a little then there’s no reason you can’t apply to some really good schools. Shoot for out of state unless money will be an issue.
