If I’m applying to a UC school, should I mention my cheating incident that happened for my chemistry final (Look at my other thread for the story: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/california-colleges/1793940-cheating-on-high-school-records.html#latest)? I got a 0 on the final and I ended up getting a C in that class. My transcript is filled with As and Bs, and my Bs are never in science classes with the exception to AP Physics C, so it might look odd. The class also gave me a NI or U (needs improvement or unsatisfactory? one or the other; I don’t remember and can’t view it), but I do not know if it will appear on the transcript when I submit my application. So basically, should I take the opportunity to explain myself because/if they know I cheated? Or not mention anything because/if colleges do not know? I feel like it might hurt my chances of getting admitted if I explain myself.
What you MUST do is ask your guidance counselor if this will appear on your record. Sometimes these things are internal records only, and thus will never be included on your transcript to schools and programs.
Ease your mind. Shoot your guidance counselor an inquiry.
Thank you. I will be sure to do that.
I also agree that you need to clarify it with your guidance counselor first. I had an issue with my contacts and plagiarism issue, but it was mentioned only in my internal records, so no need to indicate everything in your personal statement.
I love the Alan Gelb Rule (see his book on writing essays):
NEVER EXPLAIN, COMPLAIN, OR BRAG!
That is a very important rule. So, the answer is no, don’t do it.
