Should dogs be allowed everywhere?

I saw a dog taking a big dump in Costco… and the owner didn’t attempt much cleanup. It was pretty disgusting!

How do you feel about a small business owner who keeps his unruly dog in the public space? I traveled 2 hours last week to select a headstone for my mother’s grave. When I walked in, the owner’s dog spent 5-7 minutes jumping all over me, barking loudly, and running around the showroom. It was a poodle/portuguese water dog, so not a small puppy. The owner seemed oblivious to my discomfort. Thankfully, my husband was with me and suggested he put the dog in a back room. That worked for awhile, but the dog barked to get out. My husband wrangled the dog so I could concentrate. Several times, the dog got out of his grasp and was licking my feet and jumping on my lap. I noticed that he pulled several loose threads from a new pair of linen pants.

I’m normally fine with dogs but this was a pretty stressful situation, even if no dog was there. I couldn’t wait to get out of there.

The owner of that business should have had a better plan!

My friend has a dog who has bitten someone before. She really does a great job of keeping him away from people. We have a small dog park that can be reserved and she did reserve it for her dog to have 30 min play time. Her dog was running around when another lady came with her dog who insisted it was ok as the dog was friendly, my friend told her that may be true but her dog was not. The owner of the dog park said once the gate is open anyone is free to use it, so what’s the point of making reservations?

I’ve never heard of a public dog park that allowed reservations. However, if the park is open to anyone when reserved, it doesn’t sound like an actual reservation. It reminds me of the Seinfeld clip when Jerry reserves a rental car, then the attendant tells him they ran out of cars in spite of his car being reserved – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-brgkkjnHc

Another option is Sniffspot – Dog Parks for Rent Near You | Sniffspot . It supports private locations that really are reservations.

Saw the same thing in Target a while back. All the stores here have the “only service animals” signs, but they are ignored. At Costco one cashier was playing with a customer’s puppy. I’ve never seen anyone say anything. Maybe the signs are just a CYA for the health department.

Sniffspots are great options - my D frequently used one when she lived in Seattle. They are definitely not as common in my area. We are thinking of fencing our yard but I really don’t want to incur the expense and honestly, our dogs enjoy their walks.
