Should he even try?

My son’s English teacher is appalled that he is not considering Yale. Truthfully, we just figured he didn’t have a chance. Anyone care to weigh in?

SATS: R 800, W 750, M 660
SAT IIs: English 720, Chemistry 630
GPA Unweighted 3.5 (but I think that will change upwards) and weighted 4.4
APs: English Composition, English Literature, Physics, Calculus, US History
Rank: 28/350 unweighted, 17/350 weighted.
No hooks except his teacher thinks his personality will count for a lot.

Passions are writing, improv and drama. He’s been in a million productions both on stage and behind the scenes in various places. Drama Club Vice President. Improv Players. Won a state competition for being in the Best Show and Best Comic Timing.

National Honor Society. National Merit Scholar Commended Student. Volunteered: Costa Rica wildlife project, local community theater, Guttenberg Reading Project

Yale is a pretty high reach with those stats, but it’s not absurd to apply. Yale does take some students like this–but not many. As long as it’s part of a broader list with safeties, matches, and reaches, there’s no harm in applying, as long as (1) it doesn’t take away from other, more realistic, applications, and (2) your son doesn’t get his heart too set on Yale (or any other particular highly selective school).

I agree w/Hunt. The accept rate for those not applying is zero. Your son is similar to many other applicants – it’s true. And Yale is forecasting 30,000 applicants this upcoming season for 1950 accepts (6.5% accept rate) but that’s why it’s called a reach.

Whatever your son decides, he can also mollify the teacher with the numbers I just quoted you. Best of luck to your family

I have seen a lot of actors coming from Yale - I’m assuming they have a big drama program. With an 800 critical reading, which is far more desirable than an 800 math, I would have him apply if he was my kid.

Assuming he’s the best graduating improv/comedy/theater kid in your area, I’d guess he has a better-than-6.5% chance of admission, but I don’t even know how to guess how much better.

If you’re looking for advice: (1) see if he can increase his SAT I Math score and substitute something better for his SAT II Chem score. (2) Apply to some schools he loves that are not as tough to get into. (You’ve probably already got this one covered.)

30000 applicants for this admissions cycle? man, that’s crazy :frowning: where did they say that? it would really suck…

In an info session, an area rep said Yale was anticipating +10-15% from last year’s 26003 applications based on trends. I guess then the number is 28600 to 29900. Crazy, I agree.

apply

it would be horrible living with that sense of regret and “what if” because you didn’t even try
