Should I Apply If I Plan To Transfer?

I plan to attend a university closer to home my freshman year so that I can get used to independence without having to do everything completely on my own, as I am sick and sometimes depend on my parents. It’s about time to start applying to colleges. I know which university I want to attend, but I would like to transfer my Sophomore or Junior year. Obviously, I’m going to apply to the nearby university. My question is: should I apply to other universities, as well (like the universities I’m considering transferring to later), or should I just apply to the local schools I’m considering for my Freshman year?

It makes sense to apply only to colleges you would consider attending. No point in spending time and money applying to colleges you will not attend.

However, among 4-year schools, it is best to choose those that would at least be acceptable to stay at and graduate from (i.e. it has the academic programs and majors you are interested in and would be affordable), since transfer admission and financial aid may be uncertain, or you may decide not to transfer. Starting at a community college with good transfer prep offerings and advising can also be a good option if it is significantly less expensive, though transfer would be required to finish a bachelor’s degree. Some 4-year schools (e.g. California public universities) take most of their transfer students from community colleges.
