Should I apply test-optional because of a low math ACT subscore?

So I got a 34 on the ACT which I know is good overall, but my sub scores are 30M, 33S, 36E, 36R.

Since I am applying to some very competitive schools for computer science, I know having a low math sub score (at least by the standards of these schools) can really hurt my chances.

I have shown my proficiency in math a fair amount, I’ll be taking Calc 3 next year and have done well in all my math classes (not sure what my AP score on Calc BC is yet though). I was just super bad at the math section of the ACT I guess.

I guess what I’m asking is should I go test optional for schools that prioritize stats a lot? Here are my reach schools I’m applying to:

Northeastern
Notre Dame
Rice
Cal Poly SLO
Tufts
Carnegie Mellon
WashU
Pomona
Brown

Which of these should I go test-optional for, if any? I know CPSLO and CMU are very stats focused and CS is very competitive.

Cal Poly is test blind this cycle, so that decision is made for you.

For the rest, I would look at the schools’ Common Data Sets to see what the 25-75% math ACT score for matriculated students is. If the 30 is below the MEDIAN, I would apply test optional…one big caveat is I don’t know anything about the rest of your application.

Bottom line, if your test score doesn’t add strength to your application, apply test optional.
