Should I Apply to GS With My Struggles in Mind?

I am a good student, but my motivations for applying stem from the realities that I have experienced. I am talking about harassment and assault in every form. Are these motivational forces worth an application to GS? My academic goals will be met, but am I also being as selfish as my offenders?

You’re not being selfish by striving to get the best education your circumstances can afford you. If that means that somewhere along the way you got derailed due to an uncontrollable or adverse situation, you are well served to freshly reapply yourself. My advice, and what I did in my application, is to clearly specify your “perseverance” and how that correlates to your academic goals. In other words, try to convey a duality, both through your previous burdens and fresh, positive academic outlook.
