Should I Apply to UT?

I am from out of state on the west coast.

3.2 GPA throughout high school

1610 on SATs

Over 300 Community Service Hours

National Honor Society

Private High School

I have taken extra classes before school such as leadership and student government.

I have played basketball, football, track, and swim all my years in high school.

I am in good standing with all my teachers.

I don’t have bad grades but nothing to fancy, and I have been consistent with something between a 3.1 and 3.3 every semester of HS.

Should I even apply in 2012 or is it too much of a reach? Thank you.

Being OOS already hurts you, but your stats are pretty low for UT. I’m not saying don’t apply, but UT will definitely be a reach for you. What are you looking to major in? If you’re trying for McCombs/Cockrell/Communications, it’s a pretty high reach.

How would being out of state hurt me? I was under the impression that out of state applicants have an easier time getting into these big public schools because they would be paying the big $$ - out of state tuition? Am I wrong on this?

Not necessarily, it depends on the school. Being out of state hurts you because UT has the top 9% rule, meaning they have to automatically admit anyone in the top 9% of their Texas public school. The majority of the freshman class is made up of auto admits, then some non auto admits from in state, then some out of staters and internationals. Being out of state, you need to have very high stats because they don’t accept lots of you. It especially depends on what school within UT you are applying to.

It seems like a long shot but you should write good essays and apply anyways.

Could you guys chance me for UT?

I’m Out of State but have…

-3.8 GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
-31 ACT
-and many extracurriculars as well as various leadership positions

*I’m applying to the film school, which I know is very selective.

Is that how all public schools throughout the nation are? Or just UT?

Referring to the whole 9% thing that is.

Maybe other states have similar policies, but this specific rule only applies to Texas public universities. OOS admissions for UT are EXTREMELY competitive because like 90something percent of the people that end up getting admitted are Texans. So the odds are not in your favor. Do you have an opportunity to take the ACT or retake the SAT this summer or early fall? If you have good ECs, a decent GPA and excellent test scores and essays you’ll definitely have a better chance at UT. Good luck.

dannyboy5 you have a good chance. robert93 you don’t have a great chance

no, UT has messed up admissions policies so there’s no way you could get in unless you’re like college level good with those athletics. do you live in california? most of the UCs are better than UT anyway… just go there (if you’re in state)
