I am thinking of applying RD for U Chicago. I have had A’s in all math and science courses and A in a comp sci class at the local university as well as an A in multivariable Calc at the university. Where I run a problem is my English has never been great. I have gotten almost all B’s but I have challenged myself the past 2 years taking both English AP classes. I have a low class rank because of this and because I am at the top HS in Colorado (at lease public). I also don’t test well and got a 550 on CR for the SAT but I have a 740 Math (which I feel is low for myself) and a 560 in writing. on SAT2 I got an 800 Math 2C and 750 Chemistry. A few other things I have done are I self studied BC calculus and got a 5 on the AP test and I was awarded with honors in the National Chemistry Olympiad test (that is top 150 in the nation). I have a few other little things like mock trial and a great passion for running but what I posted is the gist for academics. So the bottom line is is it even worth applying to U Chicago or will my test scores and English grades effectively get my rejected.

if you dont try, u can NEVER get in… give it a shot

this is very true. Does rice overlook english and history well or does it kill applications?

oops definatly ment U chicago here sorry I thought I was in the rice forum. Sorry about that I meant does U chicago over look low Verbal SATs.

I think you still have a chance if they are impressed with the rest of your application. I have the exact opposite problem (bad Math SAT)… I think they will appreciate that you challenged yourself by taking AP English. Like people told me, it doesn’t mean that you can’t get in at all. Emphasize your stengths.

You will have to make the case for yourself in your essays. In this case, the why Chicago essay may be of great importance.

I like to think that UChicago is the least shallow of the elite universities in the sense that they will give you a chance to prove yourself. I don’t really have much of a chance of getting into HPYS because I’m not the “perfect student”, I don’t go one of the country’s best high schools, and I don’t have nearly perfect SAT scores. Yale wouldn’t even give me an interview because “an alumni is not allocated to my school”, which is another way of saying “your school is not good enough”.

UChicago, on the other hand, gave me a chance. And I got in. So, if they gave me a chance, they will give you a chance.

they didnt give you an interview???
Whoa… thats so totally biased

Well I didn’t have an interview and I got in. When they say that the interview can only help you and is not essential to the admissions process, I’m pretty sure they mean it. Don’t sweat the itnerview or the lack thereof.

Yeah, they told me that an interview isn’t required, but I still really would have liked one. And it sucks that they didn’t give it to me.

awesome thank you very much

Yes. I am not the perfect student: 77/295 rank, 3.3 GPA, no APs, no weighted classes, 28 ACT. 3.45 GPA in 2 years of college with a Dean’s List last semester. I’m applying and trying my best to get in - I believe I have a chance here as opposed to HYPS which would see the77 and walk away.

Please tell us that you aren’t Asian, because that’s the typical Asian applicant that every top-notch college (besides the UC schools) tries to avoid. If you aren’t, you’re probably fine.

write a pimpin’ essay and you can get in

what’s better than any good verbal score is that you taught yourself BC Calculus… I think a school like Chicago values self-motivated students over naturally talented students
