Should I ask my ex sports coach to write a letter of recommendation for me?

My sports coach knows me for last 10 to 12 years. I was thinking of asking him to write a letter of recommendation for me.But the problem is he was my coach for 6 years in school. Now i am in a different high school and he didnt coach me for last 2 years. Will it be acceptable to send a letter of recommendation from him?

Oh! I forgot to mention that the letter would be as a supplemental.I will have 3 letter of recommend…from my high school. Two from subject teachers and one from guidance counselor. We it be okay to send a supplemental letter from him?

I’d say no, unless you’re being recruited for college sports or on a top team in your state. If he can contribute new information not already in your application or in other LORs, you could consider it, but it isn’t obvious that would be the case. Read college requirements carefully, because many don’t want a fourth LOR.

I think if you do send in an additional LOR (which is not necessary) it should be from someone who can speak to attributes you display currently rather than in 10th grade and earlier. The exception might be if you are recruited athlete in that sport (and even then I would probably ask your current coach assuming you have a good relationship).

Okay.Thank you so much guys. I have decided not to ask him for the letter of recommendation.
