Should I be looking for summer jobs while I am interviewing for summer internships?

I’m interviewing for summer internships out of state, but I can see a lot of good places are hiring for the summer. Pool season began in February for us, so they’re looking to hire within this month or next. I was told by my interviewers (internships) that I won’t hear back for probably 3-4 weeks, if I even hear back, because they’re going through the interview process with tons of other people.

Would it be a good idea to try to get a summer job?

I wonder if it would be rude or inconsiderate to take a job then quit possibly within a month given that I do get the internships. I’m just worried about the bad rep I may get for quitting so early on because they’re hiring at huge hotels (pay is great and include tips) for pool season, and I plan on applying to these companies some time in the future.

I think you would be fine to apply for those jobs. As long as you give your employer reasonable notice, they will understand – it’s not as if you are being hired for an executive position. You are applying for a temporary, seasonal position and so there is an expectation of high turnover.

Down the line when you are applying for jobs after earning a college degree, you probably won’t even bother to list that sort of job on your resume-- so your future employers will not even make the connection.

Ya’ gotta look out for Number One. You might not get an internship. So look for a job at the same time.
