I’m finishing up my AS in natural sciences at an East Coast community college and trying to decide upon which 4 year schools to apply to. My GPA is 3.97, EC include honors program, phi theta kappa, capstone research, SOARS program, ecological research, treasurer of bio club, internship at NIH which will result in publication, speeches for the college, tutoring, some volunteering and more.
My transcript is very strong, but my high school gpa and sat were weak. I had a 1700 combined, something like an 1100 math and verbal. My gpa was a solid B, and I had many absences. I graduated HS 7 years ago and am a very different person now, but am not sure if that matters.
I want to give cornell and unpenn a shot, along with notre dame, but wonder if its even worth it becuse of the high school mediocrity?
any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Yeah why not…GPA is strong. I would apply to places that don’t want test scores. Plus your HS is weighted much less since it has been 7 years.
If you will be ready to transfer at the junior level, then your high school record will be much less relevant than your college record.
Definitely give them a shot. You may also want to see if UPenn LPS has the majors you want. Possibly Columbia GS as well, though that is far more expensive.
Well if you can afford to go out of state why not.
My situation is exactly the same as yours but I decided not to apply to all the big schools outside my state. Even if I do get in, I wont be able to afford them.
If I’m not mistaken, most of the top private schools have excellent aid, often meeting full need.

Top private schools do give a lot of aid. I know for Cornell, they give a lot if you can’t afford it.
Colleges have net price calculators on their web sites to give financial aid estimates.
Good job on your stats now. May as well try, and if you’re applying as a transfer, they may not care about your high school GPA and scores. Also apply to some safeties just in case. Good luck!
Financial aid is generally much less for transfers. OP needs to go to Common Data sets to figure out how many transfer students each school accepts. I believe Ivy schools have very few transfer slots; they retain their under grads. Go for it but apply to the top state universities in your state. In my state the have money specifically for in state community college transfers. Have some financial safeties.
