Should I buy the mirror online or just buy it once I get to school?

Me and my roommate agreed that I would buy a mirror for the room while she would supply a mini-fridge. I’m having difficulty deciding whether I should buy the mirror online and pick it up at the store or buy it once I get to school. My mom said I should do the latter option, however I’m worried that if I do that it will be both more likely to not find mirrors within my price range and more difficult to find a mirror because I feel like many other students will be going out to get a mirror for their dorm rooms too. I feel like this is a silly question that shouldn’t require so much thinking, but what do you guys think?

Amazon Prime once you are at school? (6 months free for college students)

If you are flying to school, or your car will be super full, your mom has a point. Plus, figuring out the size & location could be a challenge. Also – your dorm may have rules about nails/hangers in walls – many do not allow them. You need to follow those rules. So you may want one that can stand on a dresser or something.

Yeah, I’ve thought about the option of ordering a mirror and having it mailed to the school, but I’m worried about it breaking during the delievery process. While I was looking at some reviews for mirrors I was interested in a couple of reviews complained about their mirrors arriving broken. So I’m a little iffy about that option.

@intparent so you think even though there will probably be other students also buying mirrors I shouldn’t have too much of a problem finding one?

You may have trouble. But if there is no room in the car or you are flying, or you don’t really know if you can hang itup, then you don’t have a lot of choices. I suspect you are more worried about letting your roommate down on not having a mirror on the first day – but you can let her know that you might not have it the first day, and she will probably be fine. You can always go down the hall to the bathroom for a short time.

If the mirror arrives broken, then I assume you have recourse against the shipper and you can return it, and they will send another.

If you are sure about the room configuration and the one you want, and that you can hang it up for sure, does your college town have a Bed Bath & Beyond? I think they allow you to order things and pick them up a the location closest to your college when school starts. I know they do it with bedding, and I assume probably other things as well. So you can check into that.

I think I’ll just order it online and pick it up at store. My roommate will be on campus some days before me so I guess I’ll just ask her about the room configuration and she could send some pictures and that way I can choose the best one. If that doesn’t work and a mirror isn’t available for in store pick up, I guess I’ll just buy it once I get to school. Thanks for the advice! It was really helpful. :slight_smile:

Be sure you know if you are able to put nails in the wall. MANY dorms have rules against this, and you probably can’t hang a mirror (heavy) on the kind that stick to the wall, it will likely fall and break. THe rules should be in your housing contract or move-in info from the college. Don’t assume you can just break that rule. And don’t do it without getting your mom’s okay that it will fit in the car (trust me – just drove 2.5 days cross country with D2 to help her settle in a grad school, and I would NOT have been happy if she’d done something like this without discussing with me – there wasn’t a spare inch in the car).

I’m from NYC so me and my family rely on the subway for transportation. As a result, we do not have a car. A lot of my dorm stuff from last year I have in storage upstate, so I will be taking a greyhound bus with the clothes I’ll need for this semester with me. The reason we can’t use the mirror we used last year is because we were in a triple and our other roommate was the one who supplied the mirror.I was planning on just taking either the public bus, a cab, or having a friend drive me to Walmart/bed bath and beyond/Target once I settled in on campus. I guess I should’ve included that in the summary portion of my question. Sorry about that. I am planning on either getting an over the door mirror or a floor/leaner mirror, so no worries about me nailing it to the wall. Thank you for the heads up though. :slight_smile:

Watch grammar please. Me is not first tense. Substitute I in two sentences that started with me.

As for the mirror, go to Amazon to compare mirrors and prices. Amazon delivers to your resident in a day or two if you have prime. Waiting until you arrive gives you time to find out rules for hanging mirrors and lets your roommate help pick.

Okay. Correction: “My roommate and I agreed…” I couldn’t find the other sentence. Thank you for the mini-grammar lesson. It is greatly appreciated. Also, thank you for your advice. I’ll take that option into consideration.

If there is a Walmart or BB&Beyond nearby, they carry the over the door mirrors year round and have a ton of them now for college students.

@TQfromtheU Thank you! :slight_smile:

As an update, I’ve decided to just buy it once I get on campus. My roommate agreed to drive me to the Target in town so that’s great. Thanks for the help everybody!
