Should I choose Stony Brook University [$48k] or William and Mary [$42k] for Computer Science?

Stony Brook University vs William and Mary for Computer Science?

I’m having trouble deciding between the two colleges for Computer Science. I’m entering as a College Freshman in Fall 2024.

Net price per year at each college, after applying scholarships and financial aid grants.

Stony Brook University: $48K/year (out-of-state)
William and Mary: $42K/year (in-state)

The price difference between the colleges is similar enough to where it isn’t a large factor in the decision-making process for me.

Major/division admitted to at each college, if applicable to the college. Also, any special programs like honors programs or combined degree programs (e.g. BA/BS->MD).

Stony Brook: Area of Interest in Computer Science (College of Engineering and Applied Sciences)
William and Mary: Computer Science (Department of Computer Science)

I plan on pursuing the BS program for both schools. Both are not direct admission into the major, but I was listed as an AOI for Stony Brook.

If you applied to regular fall term start, specify if you were admitted to start at a different campus, in study abroad, in an online/distance or extension program, or other than in the fall term.

I am starting in the fall on campus, without any special circumstances.

Desired major and post-graduation goals (including if pre-med, pre-law, etc.).

I am majoring in Computer Science while planning to pursue a job in the A.I. field, for now.

International or domestic student (and state of residency if domestic).

For William and Mary, I am an in-state student, while for Stony Brook University I am an out-of-state student.

Student preferences beyond the above (including weather, class sizes, campus culture, college demographics, fraternities/sororities, distance from home, etc.).

I prefer to attend a lively campus with rich culture and diversity. I don’t mind proximity to home, but William and Mary is within an hour from where I live. Class sizes aren’t a huge factor for me, but smaller is typically better. However, I do prefer larger colleges, but again it isn’t a huge factor.

Above all, I prioritize the quality of the program and the educational experience itself, as well as connections to the industry.

Preliminary assessment of each college based on the above.

For Stony Brook, being to close to New York City is a huge plus, especially with the connections it brings. From the research I’ve done, I’ve heard that SBU has a better CS program than W&M, but the rankings/anecdotes are varied from what I found. I also appreciate the greater diversity at SBU, especially as an Asian American.

On the other hand, I’ve heard W&M is better for the college experience itself, with a more active social scene. Based on rankings, I saw that the college itself is overall ranked higher nationally than SBU. SBU is also closer to home, which makes visiting family easier, but as stated above that’s not a large factor.

Why did you apply to each college you are considering?

I applied to SBU because a family friend recommended it to me and its well-known CS program, while I applied to W&M for its reputation and because it is in-state. I have also heard that W&M is greatly increasing its funding for CS. As of right now, I am leaning on SBU, but W&M is still a huge consideration.

Main Question

I have already looked into both colleges thoroughly, but I’m still somewhat unsure which is better. Clearly, both have their strengths and weaknesses, but I would like external feedback on which is better suited for me. I know that CS is a very industry-experience focused career, and I’m also wondering which college would best prepare me for that.

Thank you all!

Note that Stony Brook has secondary admission to CS: B- or better and 3.20 GPA or higher in prerequisite CS courses, and 3.00 GPA or higher overall.

I have taken that into consideration, and I am willing to go through the process.

Are there other majors at Stony Brook that you are willing to do if not admitted to the CS major, or would you apply for transfer admission to some other school in that case?

I wouldn’t worry which is better for CS. I would worry which is better for you.

Others have commented that historically SBU clears out on weekends - ie suitcase school. Will that bother you ?

Nationally W&M is the much better name but it doesn’t matter when you narrow to your personal situation.

If W&M weren’t near home, how would you feel ?

What are these connections SBU brings that W&M wouldn’t ? You’re making a location based assumption but do you know it to be true ?

Good luck.

The other majors at SBU that I’m also interested in are Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering, but I know they also have the same admission requirements as Computer Science. I am open to considering transfer admission.

I’m not too bothered that SBU will clear out on the weekends, but generally, a non-suitcase school would be better.

I don’t mind if W&M was close to home or not, if anything I prefer being farther from home.

Our family knows a few people in Long Island that has testified there being more connections based on location, but I have not verified it.

William and Mary may be closer to your home, but you don’t have to go home at all if you don’t want to. Easier for your family to visit if that would be nice. Ultimately, you need to decide which campus you would prefer. It will be much colder/snowy in NY if that factors at all. I know there are students who would love to have a spot at those schools, so you should decide and let the other one go.

No bad choices here. Personally, I would choose W&M as I think it would have a more vibrant campus life. SB is an excellent university (particularly for STEM) but it does have a reputation for being a bit of a suitcase school – and FWIW the college is is not terribly close to Manhattan. Also having a sure path to your desired major at W&M is a big plus.

I can’t imagine SBU has better connections than W&M - although either way, I’d verify.

Ask each for a detailed placement report in CS.

SBU doesn’t have a major only report so ask - but they report salaries of $61K for CS one year after graduation (this was 21-22).

Here’s the W&M report but I don’t see CS - ask.

Research and verify vs. just assume. Both schools (the CS departments or career centers) can get you info.

Good luck.

Congratulations on getting into these 2 excellent colleges!
W&M will have stronger recognition both in the DC/VA/MD area & nationally, and more to do both on campus and in the immediate area.
Btw Long Island is NOT NYC. Stony Brook does have an excellent reputation in NYS for the sciences but it empties out on weekends - not as many people from Upstate let alone OOS, though of course hundreds stay - so it wouldn’t be my choice because there’s more to college than attending classes, no matter how good the classes are, especially since you have a topnotch choice at instate prices.
If it were instate for you things would be different. Stony Brook is a great choice for students from Long Island and NYC (especially if they don’t expect to stay on campus.)

And stony brook is eastern suffolk county LI. Solid 2 hour train ride into the city and the drive is longer because of long island traffic
