Should I credit / no credit, audit, or neither an elective within the major?

I currently am going into my last year in college with a low 3.9 GPA (the cutoff to graduate summa cum laude is 3.9).

I have 27 required units to go + 3 with this extra class, but any bad grades or sequence of bad grades will hit the GPA below 3.9.
The class (power electronics) is pertinent to today’s industry yet I do not need it to graduate. Is it okay to credit / no credit and will there be negative consequences?

If it’s within the major its best to do neither.

You’ll be kicking yourself if you earn an A that is turned into merely Credit and you miss the desired GPA threshold by a small enough amount that the A instead of the Credit would have brought you over the GPA threshold.

Realistically, even if you are pre-med or pre-law, is 3.91 versus 3.89 really that big a difference that you have to strategize GPA-grubbing?

If you plan for medical school or law school, don’t take it credit or no credit. But if not and don’t care so much for the class then do take it with credit or no credit.

Thanks for opinions. I just experienced a 17 unit upper division semester with 2 labs and that’s what brought my GPA from a high 3.9 to a low 3.9 with a decent part blaming the workload. I still have 5 labs in those 27 units so I want to limit the courses I take or else the GPA is going down.

Is your goal medical school, law school, or something else that is highly GPA-sensitive that you feel that you have to resort to GPA-grubbing?

Summa cum laude honors. … Of course I’m not going to law / medical school. I’m taking the course to help me in the engineering field.

Lab courses are always time consuming. So plan your schedule accordingly.
