Should I do a gap year?

I have no idea what I want to major in and the career I want. So should I take a year off before college and travel to experience things from different cultures? Or should I just go directly to college?

My sister did a gap year. In general, gap years are pretty pointless unless you really do something amazing. I recommend going to a college with flexible allowances for changing your major.

College is all about figuring out what you want to do. Most students change their major at least once, some 2 or 3 or 4 times. Pick some well rounded schools and apply “undecided.”

Also, look into colleges such as NYU which allow you to go abroad your first semester. Being away in a different culture while attending college is a somewhat more efficient use of time, and you may come away with ideas that way.

Hey if you’re not sure what you want to do I would definitely recommend a gap year as long as you do something constructive! Do some volunteering, work overseas for a few months, learn a new language or a new skill like deep sea diving. All of these new experiences will help you identify what you’re interested in and look really good on applications as you won’t have wasted your time off, check out this site [Real Gap are experts in providing exciting volunteer vacation projects, adventure travel gaps and paid work abroad](http://www.realgap.com/) there are lots of good gap year ideas there and you can chat to them as they have offices in the US.
